Interesting take on art history
Well written and informative book by seemingly unlikely writers: a religious scholar and an oral surgeon. I learned about this book in the context of reading other works on Leonardo da Vinci and learned these authors have written other works on Leonardo and art.In ‘modern times’ we tend to take Leonardo’s fame for granted but as this book illustrates, there was no preordained reason this had to be so. Starting with Leonardo finally finding a reliable patron in Francis l of France, it goes century by century describing how Leonardo’s art legacy was kept alive. (As other reviewers have pointed out, this work is not great on the ‘scientific’ and notebook aspects but it is in keeping with the theme of the book as it was the art rather than the science until relatively recent times). Lots of color photos used for illustration.Of course a lot of the discussion focuses on the Last Supper mural. The authors rightly acknowledge this was not a fresco but keep referring to it as such which somehow l found irritating. The other focus is, of course, the Mona Lisa.I found it interesting that the religious aspects of Leonardo’s life and work were discussed, something ignored by many art historians. I loved the last line that points out an ify work by Leonardo was purchased by the ruler of Saudi Arabia for $450 million: this is a portrait of Jesus Christ in a country where the practice of Christianity is ILLEGAL ‼️

Fantastic book and a must read!!!
This is a must read for all of you Da Vinci fans and those who are just interested in learning more about the history of his artwork. (author) Christopher Heath Brown and Dr Jean-Pierre Isbouts did an excellent job and the book is very well written. I highly recommend purchasing this book.

Great Book!
This is a great book with illustrations that are relevant to the pages being read. It is chronological for the most part, talking about da Vinci's life and the artists who surrounded or followed him. You can even see where to find the paintings shown in the book! I gave it to my son, and it is helping him with an art history class he was assigned.

Beautifully made - great book
This is a beautiful book and a serious dive into the making of Leonardo da Vinci and why his work is the world's most visited. I never truly understood why one painter was so beloved, when there have been so many other greats. Now I do.
