Very Good Chess Board, Very Good Finish
Overall a very good chess board. This board is assembled with inlaid squares and an inlaid border. I suspect the individual inlaid pieces are veneer, perhaps 1/16" (1.5 mm) thick. Perhaps thinner? The board (as new) appears to be flat and in plane. Hopefully it will remain so. The outer trim with rounded corners is nicely finished. The overall craftsmanship is very good. The craftsmanship exhibited in positioning the individual squares is good. This board is heavy! The given weight of 9.83# appears appropriate as a minimum weight.The following descriptions apply to the board that I received. The overall (out to out) size is 21" x 21" x 0.75". Squares appear to be walnut (a 5 value brown) and maple. Could they be "acacia" and "boxwood"? Maybe? The dark squares (and outer trim) are very consistent in color, value and grain. The white squares show a greater variation in value and grain appropriate to maple. No squares stick out like a sore thumb. This board is advertised as having approximate 2.25" squares which would yield an 18" x 18" playing field. The squares are actually 2.175" x 2.175" creating a 17.4" x 17.4" playing field. I prefer the slightly smaller square/playing field size. Others might consider it - a deal breaker. The white (maple?) boarder surrounding the playing field is 0.2" wide. The board's flat under side is covered by 20" x 20" thin green felt. To sum it up, a very nice board that compliments my 3.75" King - Sinquefield 2017 Cup Chess pieces, that will also serve 4.2" King pieces. See attached photos.
