high quality everyday knife
This is a thin bladed utility knife for everyday use. It does a great job chopping anything including meat cleaning and filleting. It has a nice balance and very easy to control to get detailed jobs done..The metal used looks great and it has a fine finish. My knife did not come very sharp but the cross section of the overall blade shows itself that it was treated nicely for the owner to be able to keep it sharp easily. It was easy to sharpen it. I am actually happy that I had to sharpen it because it gave me the feeling and the confidence about the metal it is made of. As per my experience with knifes, my feeling is that it is a great steel and would hold the edge quite while. The balance of the knife is on the handle. For such a blade shape that is normal and gives me the feeling that the knife is full tang. It looks like the blade is attached to the wooden handle with the end piece connected to the tang. The handle is beautiful, smooth and ergonomic. It is not polished but really smooth. The wood grain is very elegant. Metal and wood transitions are really smooth although I can feel these pieces are not machined after they have been assembled. Also the seal included on both sides of the handle looks really nice and gives the high quality look and feeling. I couldn't make sure if this stamped seal is also a rivet or not. Possibly it is not a rivet. So I will be extra careful if I feel any shakiness on the handle and I will never put this piece in to the dishwasher. The protective sheath is nice and fits well with the blade.Overall, this is a beautiful and high quality knife which is also giftable.

Not that sharp
It did not seem any sharper than any knife that I can get at Target. Also, the sleeve that it slides into is very cheaply made and won’t hold up.

A good “one knife” choice
Very sharp and comfortable in the hand. I could see this becoming my go-to knife for 80% of my time. I usually travel with a knife in my suitcase for away from home meal prep. This is it, and the blade cover is a major benefit. Plus, there was a 50% discount coupon. A no brainer choice.

A Good Knife with a Possibly Sketchy Past
The KYOKU 5 Inch Utility Knife has good looks and performance, too. To begin, it comes with a very nice gift/presentation style box with a black lining and blade protector. The one-piece ergonomic rosewood handle has a stylish gold inlay and a kanji saying "Kyoku" and "Kyoku" written out in Roman letters. (The Japanese wife believes they took part of the Japanese word "kyukyoku" which means, "ultimate.") For the performance, it has a 'Japanese" stainless steel blade (but it doesn't say "Full Tang" in the description) that is very sharp. That being said, the blade has a definite left bias (it's crooked). I gave it the Japanese wife test and she says she likes it - good size and sharp. I showed her the crooked blade and she looked at me says, "So?" Go figure on that. And now for the sketchy part. First, while the description says "Daimyo Series," it appears that this knife is from Kyoku's "Samurai Series." My other problem is that the description keeps emphasizing "Japanese Steel" but I cannot find any place of manufacture listed on the knife, the packaging, the Amazon website or the Kyoku company website. 19 USC 1304: "Marking of imported articles and containers" states, [E]very article of foreign origin (or its container, as provided in subsection (b) hereof) imported into the United States shall be marked in a conspicuous place as legibly, indelibly, and permanently as the nature of the article (or container) will permit in such manner as to indicate to an ultimate purchaser in the United States the English name of the country of origin of the article." The lack of markings makes it sketch. Search "Fake Japanese Knives" for additional details.

Looks great, could have been better.
This is a good-looking knife that falls a bit short when it comes to execution.Pros: - This product excels when it comes to presentation. The knife comes in a great-looking box with Japanese lettering. Inside the box, there is also a sheath, which is a nice touch. - It looks like it is well made, with the Japanese letters on the blade and the base of the handle, and the handle itself looks and feels great. - The knife is relatively sharp, I didn't feel it needed additional sharpening. It sliced through fruit and meat with ease.Cons: - The blade is not straight. If you position the knife vertically, you can see that the blade leans a few degrees to the left. - The blade is thinner and the knife is lighter than I anticipated. It doesn't feel cheap, but it could have been more substantial.Overall, it is not a bad knife if you don't mind some minor shortcomings. I will continue using it in my kitchen.

Good overall knife
This knife is a reasonably priced, small knife good for a variety of tasks. The blade was relatively sharp and the materials are fine and look good. Fit and finish was good. Overall, this isn't anything special but it does the job just fine.

Not made in Japan
This is an unbalanced utility knife with 2/3 of the weight in the handle. An ideal knife should be evenly balanced at the holster. It is also not very sharp out of the box. I struggled to slice paper edgewise. It does look classy in the included holster though. The box is gift grade, but the lack of a country of origin means it is made in China and the manufacturer is breaking the law.
