Q: The black version...is it black and white or black and cream?

No brown. I would say black & dark cream or light tan. Look at pic 4 & compare it to the white space around the close-up & this is really accurate. If you're looking for a sheet or shirt white this won't work. I use in black & white bedroom & it works due to some vintage pictures & some wood items etc. that pull it together. Seat is DETACHED but held in place by velcro. You "wiggle the back" into a slot to attach to the base. Place seat cushion & screw in 4 pre-mount legs. Unpack outside so you don't have huge box to deal with inside. Chair is not small or big. Not soft or firm. "Just right" as goldilocks says. Five stars!
