Loved it!
When our orphaned main character Grace Bennett, makes her way from the country to London, she's expecting an adventure. Her best friend Vivian by her side, they find reality of London on the cusp of the war rather different from their dreams and aspirations.I've read and loved almost all the books Madeline Martin has written. Most of which brought joy and excitement to my day. This one was the first that repeatedly made me cry. It's so beautifully written. You feel present for each defining moment. The drafting of Colin and his subsequent loss. The unfinished date with George. The struggle of Vivian to want to be more useful to the war effort. The blackouts, the bombing, the rationing of resources. The love and support of Mr Evans and Mrs Weatherford that helped Grace grow from an introvert to the much admired hero. It's just such a fantastic read. If it's the only book you read this year, read this one.

A beautiful novel filled with hope, friendship, courage and lov
The Last Bookshop in London was a wonderful read. Set in London during WW2 and the Blitz, it really shone a light on the resilience and courage of the London people who worked so hard not only in their day jobs but in volunteer roles - ARP, firefighting, recovery etc.The Last Bookshop in London reminds us that through heartache, sorrow, fear, trauma and pain we can all do extraordinary things and find hope, friendship and love even in the darkest hours.

Triumph over adversity
This was an excellent read from start to finish giving a vivid account of WW2 in the heart of London and the sacrifices and determination of the British public and armed forces to get through. The relationships were very real and were both heartbreaking and heart warming. Highly recommend as a holiday or arm chair read.

An enjoyable and easy read
This was a lovely story of two young women leaving their small English town to go to London to find work. The Second World War starts and the Germans are bombing London very often. This is about the trials and tribulationsof the English people as to how they coped bravely through such a terrible time in history. Not being English I learned a lot about how the English suffered. And also how they all volunteered and helped each other. A good story and a light and easy read!
