And forget about circling the city streets looking for parking, or getting ticketed for running out of time on the meter, or overpaying to leave your car in a parking garage. Not only will fleets of autonomous taxis make these hassles history, they'll make the urban blight and inefficiency of parking lots, spaces, and garages history too. No need for those when the taxi drops you off then keeps on driving.On the downside, we're in for a lot of disruption when these vehicles hit the streets. Not just humans having trouble adjusting to robots on the road; and not just lost jobs in trucking, ride-sharing, and school bus driving. You won't need 40 McDonald's to serve one city with fast, autonomous vehicles. You'll only need one or two mega McDonald's... and all the people working at those other locations will be out of luck. This goes for all kinds of businesses. On top of that, once all vehicles are autonomous, and no one drives, what happens if you're an 'undesirable' not permitted to ride an autonomous vehicle into a certain part of town - or any part of town? Things might get a lot tougher for those from the less desired classes of people.The portraits in this book, while they lean toward optimism, are on the whole quite balanced. I came away feeling like every perspective was addressed. (also, as a scifi writer, I came away with valuable ideas about how the transportation of the future, and those aspects of society that touch transportation, are liable to operate. Just yesterday I went back and edited the bus driver out of my novel set in the 24th Century)I much recommend the book. It's an enlightening read, and if you want to know where things are headed, you won't go wrong with "Autonomous Vehicles."
