Excellent execution of an interesting reversal
I love Harry Bosch-not so much Mickey Haller. Maybe it's because I was on the side of the state for so long. Still, the character of Bosch is simply marvelous. You can sense his intensity. This is an exciting read despite the morbid crime that forms the basis for the trial.

Loved this book. I could not put it down. Unfortunately, the audio did not come through on the videos, but that didn’t matter.

Courtroom ABCs
Anyone looking for a textbook on homicide court trials should read The Reversal. It's a cover to cover appraisal of prosecution and defense tactics to persuade the jury.

One of the best courtroom dramas I have read in some time; full of drama & simply unputdownable!
The Reversal is a terrific courtroom drama that gripped me from the start. While the lead character in the story is Mickey Haller (The Lincoln Lawyer), Harry Bosch a LAPD homicide detective and one of my favourite characters, also features extensively. What differentiates it from the other Mickey Haller stories is that Haller has a change of role, being a lead prosecutor rather than a defence lawyer. The plot is gripping; a man imprisoned for the abduction and murder of a 12 year old girl 24 years ago is freed on DNA evidence that suggests a possible miscarriage of justice has occurred. Haller is persuaded to lead the prosecution case as an 'independent' and he hires Harry Bosch as his lead investigator in a new murder trial. In addition, other characters from Haller's and Bosch's past (and present) life also feature in this story, but don't worry if you have never read any of the other novels featuring either Bosch or Haller as this novel can easily be read (and enjoyed) as a standalone thriller. What I particularly enjoyed is following the two separate threads in this story; Haller's totally absorbing courtroom scenes and Bosch's separate investigation into the case and how these two threads come together in a really dramatic climax. In short, this is one of the best courtroom dramas I have read in a long time.

Typical Connelly, lightweight but enjoyable
Harry Bosch 16 or Mickey Haller 3, the second collaboration and a much better book than the first - the Brass Verdict, I think. It is still a mainly court room set drama with Harry doing some investigating but, refreshingly, not related in any great detail. Unlike the last book the minutiae of American legal procedure is, thankfully, unexplored but we do get a glossary of legal terms at the end of the book and those terms underlined in the text. Moreover, in this enhanced edition, are several videos and photographs plus one of the author discussing the ending. The first two added very little and the third a bit pointless. The courtroom scenes are handled very well apart from the little explanations of what impact the questions and answers have had - let the reader discern that from the writing! The plot is paper thin and the case so easily won it is almost not worth bothering but the whole is very very readable and if you read it quickly that does not matter though all plot lines do just peter out apart from Harry’s who is left with a handful of unexplained child disappearances for him to agonise about - in another book?

Bosch and Haller part two
The reversal sees Michael Connelly pair up his two most successful creations Detective Harry Bosch and defence attorney Micky Haller for the second time. In the previous book The Brass Verdict Micky Haller is the star with Harry appearing numerous times. In the Brass Verdict the two are forced to work together to uncover a killer that may be linked to a case that Micky is the lead defence on at the time. The story is told from Mickey's point of view and for that book it worked very well. This book however is much more a fifty/fifty split. This story is told by both of the half-brothers and the idea of alternate chapters featuring Bosch and Micky works very well as it keeps the story moving at a very fast pace.At the start of this book new DNA evidence sees the release of a convicted child killer. After twenty four years the DNA found on the victims dress is shown to belong to someone other than Jason Jessup who is the convicted killer that has always claimed his innocence. This new evidence is enough to secure a retrial but the district attorney and the police are still convinced of Jessup's guilt. In an attempt to show independence from the original trial and the department Micky Haller is hired to prosecute the case. Despite his reservations Micky agrees but only under certain conditions one of which is the role of his ex-wife as second chair and Harry Bosch from the LAPD as his lead investigator. As good as the Brass Verdict was this book is another step up. Both lead characters are shown in a different light to previous books. Haller is a defence attorney by trade and finds the swap to the prosecution table and the extra pressure that comes with it hard to handle. Harry is also in a different situation. Not only is he working alongside his half-brother but recent changes in his personal life mean that Harry sees everything in a different way. No longer can he drop everything and go out on midnight surveillances and seeing Harry adjust to this whilst dealing with the pressures of the case is a fun change from the normal.I found this to be a very, very enjoyable book. The relationship between Harry and Micky is evolving and it is fascinating to see. The complex relationship between Micky and his ex-wife and his daughter is also explored which really added to the book. I also found the case part of the book to be very well done. The complex and sometimes unfair nature of the trial system are highlighted as at times an innocent witness can be attacked and discredited despite the issues highlighted having little or nothing to do with the case. As usual Michael Connelly has written a fast paced and hard hitting novel that evolves two of his main characters in a wonderfully well written way. I would recommend this book to any fan of the crime or legal thriller genre however I would say that to get the best results reading the Lincoln Lawyer and the Brass Verdict would add to your enjoyment. The book would work well without the previous two but I feel that reading them will add more to your understanding and enjoyment of this book.

Another ‘Wicked’ Connelly read
I grab these Connelly books as they come out and enjoy them. The characterisations are details and the people have depth, the stories all seem very well researched and this one explored the actions and motivations of the central characters well. The addition of video clips and images was a bonus. Thank you Mr Connelly!

GREAT HALLER/BOSCH BOOK
I have just read the review by 'Buster' - doesn't he/she realise that The Reversal is book 3 in the Mickey Haller series and book 16 in the chronological order of Harry Bosch books. Do some research about the books you re reading before slagging this brilliant author off. This book is as good as all the other Bosch/Haller books, I love all the twists and turns and the 'logical thinking' applied which sometimes I wish I could apply to my life :). I'm reading the whole Bosch series all over again having read them some years ago to re-aquaint myself with it all so that when I read the new Bosch book I'm on the right page - so to speak.
