Tove Jansson claimed that she created the Moomin characters after having a heated argument with her brother about philosopher Immanuel Kant. She scrawled "ugliest creature imaginable" on the toilet wall with the word Kant underneath. This made her think of other bizarre creatures and they eventually formed into one of her own creation: The Moomin.
