Nit-Noid Review: Logitech Is Reducing the Room for Improvement
I’ve never written up a review of the G403 despite having more time with it than any other mouse in the last 4 years. As the era of the G Pro Wireless dawns, I’ve returned to the G403 for the last 4 days in order to better gauge Logitech’s product evolution. The Basics:Medium-Large right-handed ergo mouse, 6 bottons, 90g out of the box with a 10g optional weight. Thick braided cable, 3366 sensor, RGB, 20M spring-tensioned omron clicks. Total time in use prior to writing review was 337 days. The Good:- OUTSTANDING clicks that are light 'n crispy with great feedback. Yes, the G303 has amazing clicks as well, and even though I like the shape of the G303’s buttons better, there is just a little more feedback on the G403’s clicks while being just as light. Some people will count light clicks as a negative, for me these are perfect. Good for FPS/MMO etc etc and etc.(Everything)- Sensor is a 3366, 200-1200 DPI available. 1 DVD liftoff distance, perfect tracking, very raw and snappy. Very accurate for all games/applications.- Shape is safe with excellent ergo on the thumb side in particular with easily accessible thumb buttons.- RGB logo, scroll and physical design gives a nice, understated look. Usable in gaming or office environments.- The mouse is very well balanced, especially with the weight, cap and internal magnets removed.- Weight without any of the above accoutrement is 88 grams.- Mouse feet are my preferred config, single big semicircle pads along the forward and aft section.-Mouse feet are some of the best for consistent glide. (However for some reason there is more sound moving up and down than side to side on my cloth mat.)- The rubber on the right and thumb and pinky side feels only slightly rough and provides the most premium feel I’ve experienced. If there is any moisture in your fingertips, the rubber just gets grippier. For me, this is the best side material ever encountered on a mouse.- Other than some intentional scratching on the thumb buttons, the mouse still looks like new after a year, no external signs of wear.- Mouse will work well for medium/large fingertip and palm users. Finger grooves seem geared more toward the palm crowd, so overall this mouse is best for palm 17cm and up.- The Logitech gaming software is solid - relatively lightweight and easy to use.- The scroll wheel is nice and wide, slightly rounded with a quality rubber texture. It feels good. While I prefer the design of the G203’s scroll, this would be a close second were it not for how loose the scroll wheel became. The Middling:- Out of the box, scroll steps were a little softer and less distinct than I’d like for FPS, good for browsing. (This got worse over time)- The infamous “hump” on the G403 provides decent palm support in my experience and I personally have had no issues, but the height of the mouse puts off some.- I usually prefer a mouse that sits lower like the G203 and G303 since that feels more accurate, but my accuracy with the G403 is second only to the G303 by a narrow margin and it is significantly more comfy and versatile for general use. (The thumb button placement is also vastly improved on the G403 since they don't angle up slightly.)- Even though there is plenty of open space on the pinky side of the mouse, grip width feels like it is on the narrow end of the spectrum. Larger hands might have more pinky drag issues than they’d like.- The top of the mouse hardly has any texture whatsoever. I’d prefer a little more, akin to Coolermaster’s PBT mice, but that is personal preference. The Bad:- Thumb buttons are glossy and a moist thumb can adhere to them, causing a hollow “thoing” sound which got annoying quickly. I actually sanded the thumb buttons with a little sandpaper to get rid of gloss/adhesion and fix the problem.- The cable is not the most flexible and it is rather thick. If there is no mouse bungee (or equivalent improv) involved, this can be a distraction.- While the mouse is a safe shape and I like it for fingertip/palm, some are put off by the hump in palm and unless you have very large hands, the length of the back end will prevent an aggressive claw grip since you may not be able to reach the thumb buttons.- The scroll has a very subtle rattle and scroll wheel steps have lost even more distinctiveness and resistance over time. This was the reason I stopped using it and moved on to the Rival 310 for a time. Later, I actually opened up the G403 and increased scroll resistance by securing part of a foam earplug in contact with the scroll wheel inside the mouse. Now scroll resistance doesn’t remind me of a G502 infinite scroll, but scroll steps are still rather indistinct. This is my biggest gripe with Logitech mice to date. There is little point in putting omron switches on a mouse that will last 10+ years with normal use when the scroll wheels on the G400S, G303 and G403 in particular begin to lose tension after around 6-8 months (400-600k scrolls). It is annoying that the scroll would be so poorly engineered while everything else actually does last. The Conclusion:This is still a premium mouse in my book with a flawless sensor. Even though the G Pro Wireless is getting all the headlines these days, the G403 should stay relevant for a long time due to having a much better price tag, being better for full palm and effectively having (let’s face it) 98% of the performance of the GPW. This mouse gets a lot of things right with safe shape, excellent materials and excellent performance. The things that were wrong were forgivable/fixable for me. After fixing the scroll wheel, I can say that the G403 has been the mouse I’ve enjoyed more than any other to date. Now that this mouse is in the $40 range, it contests the Nixeus Revel ($25-35) in terms of bang for buck. The G403 is an easier recommend that the Razer Deathadder because it is smaller, lighter and more versatile for different grips with better software. The G403 also has an edge over the Rival 310 based on being in the sweet-spot for size, better clicks and better materials. Overall, it is not without its flaws, but the G403 is still my favorite mouse to date.Nit-Noid Rating: 9.3Bang for the Buck (@ $43USD): A
