I'm sure they can if you use certain methods. .but it has nothing to do with the kind of tray you use. it's the type of water and how filtered/purified it is just google "how to make clear ice cubes" for various methods that might work.

Make sure you don't fill them all the way. If you do, then the best thing is to let them sit on the counter to let them melt a bit or run under hot water. The square shape made it difficult for me to remove the cubes right from the freezer.
