Exactly as described
This is a specialty tool that requires knowledge for use but it is simple and works great. Great for coring treated wood to test treatment penetration.

Great, occasional extraction difficulties
After several thousand extractions the summer of 2023 and prior. This Increment Borer produces clean cores, no need to sharpen it, or you might wreck it. Id rate this tool as excelent.Ive tested 12'' 16'' 18'' and 20'' in .200'' over several years. Been getting consistant results. I have an 18'' .169" diameter, but I havent tested that yet. Too busy. The one problem weve been having in the .200'' Haglofs, Is when backing the bit out of the bole. Certain softer trees Doug Fir, True Firs, and any rot! require backward presure to extract the bit from the bole. You have to turn it counter clockwise and use your body weight to get it out of the tree. Its a bit awkward, and relies heavily on the locking latch.I friend pointed out, maybe from an engineering standpoint, the back threads could be increased in depth. or something in the bit design improved. thats wy we are looking at Matson, and other old bit designs.I have no Idea. Im just reporting my experience, one I know others share.

First use in the field and the cap came of when I pulled the sample out.
I expected the borer to last more than one field trip but the cap came off the spoon and I wasn’t able to keep using the borer. Once back home I was able to fix it.
