This is an interesting carrot grater that I imagine is a very authentic style. The instructions say to oil first with vegetable oil. I used just a tiny bit and rubbed it around he grating side. The oil soaks into the wood very quickly and you can use it almost immediately.It does grate carrots into matchstick size very easily. If I had to shred more than a cup I think I would use a food processor. However, this takes a lot less room to store and is easier to set-up. You do have to watch your fingers so you don't cut them. It can also be a little difficult to get every carrot speck out when washing.For the heck of it I tried shredding a red bell pepper and a red onion. That didn't work because I think the moisture content is too high in those vegetables. Please don't tell me if bell peppers are now considered fruit.The price at this time seems good and if you like to shred a lot of carrots--but not too many--this may be perfect for you.
