True Temper 1132600 Wood Splitting Wedge, 5-Pound

This wedge is just what I needed to split the wood from a knotty Maple I had taken down over one year ago. Stacked it as logs and let it weather out for a year and now starting the process of making firewood. I don't have a stump to work with or any other solid platform so I don't swing my 10lb sledge to split wood. But properly seasoned wood, even if very knotty, can easily be taken care of with this wedge and a decent hammer. I use the Eastwing 4 lb. Blue and the work is easy on logs so far up to 10 inches. Larger base trunk pieces I would expect to be more of a challenge ... but I would not expect to center split those anyway without a large crack in place.

When I bought this, I didn't realize the picture was distorted. I thought the wedge was a lot wider than the actual result. I got it thinking that because it was so wide, I would only need one. But for larger stumps, it takes several wedges to split the wood. I had a large tree my sons and I cut down. When we got the large stump out, we used this wedge along with some homemade ones out of a 2x4 to split the thick, heavy stump. In that regard, it worked well, smashing it in with a heavy 12-lb sledge hammer.

1st delivery was an empty box with a hole in the side, but company promptly resent wedge and it works for it's intended purpose.

To say this tool is "sturdy", is an understatement; however it does NEED sharpening. Once I sharpened the chiseled end it works very well. I would recommend it to anyone that needs to split wood by hand with a small "sledge hammer"

I had a tree cut down that was over 3 feet in diameter at the base. Initially I bought the 4 pound wedge, but it often got stuck before splitting the log. Although this wedge is only 1 pound heavier, it does a much better job and has yet to get stuck before the log splits.

I would rate 5 stars. As mentioned in many reviews, it could come sharper. I'm sure there is a reason why it doesn't come sharper. Good piece of steel. Will get the job done.

You don't ask a lot of a wood splitting wedge. It does the job or it doesn't.This one does all asked of it well, while also being a solid value.Simple.
