Not a boring read
Very helpful for this brand new chess player. Easy to read and understand. Love the Dummies books!

Great General Chess Book
If you can only purchase and read one chess book, this should be the one. (However, why would you only purchase and read one chess book? They are like potato chips, in that you can't stop at one.) It provides a good basic introduction to playing chess, and delves much deeper into strategy and tactics of the game. I think mastering the information in this book would get you to the intermediate level.

All great but for the last part
This Dummies volume is written, or at least reviewed, by a chess master so you cannot go wrong. The only issue is the later sections that give you the games of top players. These games are notoriously difficult to explain and those who needed this book as beginners are not going to understand its back pages for years, if ever. By this point, of course, the book already reached its value, so again, you cannot go wrong.

If It Helped Me...
As a beginner, I appreciated the way the game was presented. I actually learned some things. Please understand that I stink at most games. Slow learner. If this book helped me, it's bound to help someone less "game challenged."

Brilliant!
This book is wonderful for an absolute beginner like me. Its unpretentious, down-to-earth style is perfect for those of us who might easily be intimidated by approaching a game with a reputation for being the pastime of intellectuals. The slow progression into the game is wonderful with entertaining sidebars for relief. The author obviously loves the game and wants you to love it, too.I had to laugh at the two reviews that gave this book one star. One said the square colors were wrong (they are correct) and the other complained about font size (if on Kindle, adjust to any size you want, if buying a hard copy, look inside first!).

Cover damaged.
This was a gift to my nephew and unfortunately I received it looking like this. Very disappointing!

Very basic but OK for beginners
Do not expect much from this book if you are ELO 800 or higher. But still OK if you never played chess and want to get started.

I am very new to chess , the Chess for Dummies 4th edition has become the go to item in my small but expanding library on the dark art that is chess mastery .I have been amazed by the depth of useful information it presents in a clear and easy to follow style . Bon livre accessible à tous
Très satisfait de cet ouvrage qui vulgarise l'échiquier en anglais sans entrer dans un vocabulaire compliqué. Impeccable our les apprentis polyglottes qui jouent aux echecs.
