Highland Guard Brilliance
Review. The ArrowAs a young orphan, Cait is rescued by Gregor MacGregor (The Arrow) after her village is decimated by the English for harbouring The Bruce's men after a battle. He takes her to live with his family, whilst he carries on fighting for the Bruce only going home occasionally.Whilst he is away, she grows up and has fallen more in love with him as she has grown and just wants him to notice her as a young woman and not the little girl he'd rescued. He has noticed, but is at war with himself for having feelings for his ward. This being said he decides he will find her a suitor to be betrothed to, but Cait has other ideas.Monica has done it again, you will be hard pressed not to put this down. It has all the elements you could wish for, the humorous interaction between the characters, the action and the romance. I absolutely loved this book as I love the series, more please.

Absolute heaven!! By far the best Scottish romance writer of them all and this series is fantastic, hooked from the first sentence as always I only wish she could write faster. This series is a definite keeper to re- read over again which I do before a new story is released.I hope there are more as no one is as good.

Brilliant. Have been waiting for this for a while ...
Brilliant. Have been waiting for this for a while and read it the day it was released. Have loved all of the Highland Guard novels and Cate and Gregor's story is no exception. Romance, espionage and strong characters all brought to life through impeccable writing, I loved it.

Could have been better
Not the best in the series by a long way. Very slow to take off, was considering giving up when halfway through and that is the first time I have felt that with this series! Not a patch on The Recruit, my favourite of them all so far.

What am I going to do now, please write a little bit faster Ms McCarty. Was a bit surprised that my home town was mentioned in the Earl of Hereford, what a horror!!

Love the Highland Guard!
I do not read a lot of historical fiction but this Highland Guard series is a must read for me. I started with The Chief ( oh my such a hot read!) and have been hooked ever since . Set in Scotland at the time of Robert the Bruce it features elite loyal men working to save their king and their country. If espionage and romance coupled with great action appeal to you then these kilted heroes should be on your book shelf .This the ninth book catches up with Gregor known as the Arrow but also unfortunately known throughout the land as the most handsome man in Scotland! It's a title that he is teased about but it's also one he hides behind as he lives up to his reputation as a ladies man . When a mission goes wrong he reluctantly agrees to return home and lie low but longs to return to battle but as the laird he has responsibilities and some are more troublesome than most!Five years ago Cate saw her mother murdered and was found shocked and afraid by Gregor and some of his fellow guardsmen. Gregor gave Cate a home and appointed himself her guardian but there's something about the wayward girl that has always appealed to him. Now he's back and Cate has clearly set her heart on winning his but she's far too young for him and his honour dictates that he not take advantage of his ward. Unfortunately for Gregor Cate wants him to take full advantage of her and she's not afraid to admit it! Furthermore she's not the child he thought but a young woman who by rights should be married so Gregor decides to find her a husband . That may seem sensible to Gregor but Cate has other ideas and Gregor is about to discover that Cate has secrets too and her past is about to catch up with them.If you are looking for a highland adventure with men in kilts then this series is a blast! Such a magical way with words the author has and it's so easy to picture events as I read. I love that each story builds upon previous adventures and we get to catch up with the rest of the Highland Guard and this author has clearly done lots of research to make her books so realistic. As I mentioned Gregor had no idea what Cates age truly is nor does he know everything about her past and the secret she carries is extraordinary ! There is an age gap between them as he is thirty one and she is twenty years old but for this reader it didn't feel that way. I don't know if it's because his fellow Guardsmen treat Gregor as someone to tease or if it's because he lets his brother run things but I wasn't convinced that Gregor was older and more worldly . Yes I got that he's a bit of a player with "lots" of experience but he fell very easily for Cates charms. It's quite a slow start but worth staying with if only for the banter from those lovely kilted Guardsmen and there's an epilogue to warm even the coldest heart.Well written, with an interesting subplot that leads nicely into the next book The Striker. It's not my favourite in the series as that will always be The Chief but this story of vengeance and betrayal coupled with romance and a surprising twist is sure to delight both old and new readers.

The Handsome One succumbs
How the most handsome man in Scotland fell in love and married King Robert Bruce's daughter is a great story. It is full of humor, romance, and dramatic events. I really hated to see it end. In fact, I will probably go back and read all of the series again because this is a great writer. The historical background is particularly important in today's world. The scenes and battles remind you of the fight for Scotland independence from England --a struggle still going on today as the vote for Scotland to secede is taking place this month. The romantic adventures of the Highland Guard add to the intrigue and make this history lesson highly entertaining.Arrow is the ninth in the series of the Highland Guard and you sense that it might be the conclusion of the series as well as the war; however, there is still one Guardsman about which we know little--Striker (McLean). I hope Ms. McCarthy does not end the series without us having the opportunity to know his story as well.Great series and ARROW is probably the best book of all. I loved it!!!!.
