Greenbrier is a thorny high climbing woody vine that may form dense impenetrable thickets. It features small yellowish-green flowers in the spring and clusters of dark blue berries in the fall. The dark green leaves are semi-evergreen and the berries will stay on the vine all winter providing important browse for deer and seeds for numerous bird species. Greenbrier grows best in moist soils in full sun or part shade. It is most often found growing in wooded edges, along streams, in woodland thickets, and in open woods. This is a successional species that can form dense thorny thickets creating good protective cover for wildlife.
