Christmas Tree VS Cats
Was putting up decor and back onto to. Yikes! But seriously, I'll be putting it under my Christmas Tree in a hope that the tree will still be standing the next day. I'll let you know how it goes.--- ok, so didn't work under the tree. They merely jumped onto the tree skipping the mats. Plan B I put the mats into the tree- deep inside where the branches connect to the trunk. I cannot see them, even when looking for them. Took a photo but it really doesn't show up. Which is great! Cats checked it out, and said no way. So far they are sitting under the tree but no longer climbing it! Perfect!

You will need several!
I do think these “help” to keep the cats from using my flower bed as a toilet, but as you can see from the photo, product isn’t perfect. I placed them a few inches apart and the mulch was still breached. I have ordered more to place tighter together in hopes these ultimately work.

Works, if you don't mind how it looks
The panel size was easy to use. They snap together (and can be separated) pretty easily, unless you are arthritic or have another issue using your hands/fingers--no problem, I tried just overlapping the edges on some of them, mostly at odd angles (because whose garden is square with perfectly spaced/sized plants?), and they stayed together just fine. They are kind of light, maybe they could blow around if in an exposed area, and some people mention animals moving them--anchor them with landscape staples, stakes, or one of the supports holding up the ring around your top heavy peonies. I also tried putting some in upside down and gently wiggling the tines into the mulch. The cats may walk on that, but they can't dig through it. My advice to anyone that is still having trouble with cats using the bathroom on these or trying to pull them up or out of the way: they probably don't have anywhere else to go--try providing a better spot for them and you. Also, they're not super flexible nor do they seem incredibly sturdy (don't walk on them!) If you need to keep cats out of mulch and don't want to see these things, or have a large area to cover, I've had success laying down inexpensive 2 inch chicken wire and covering it with a VERY thin layer of mulch. Between these two solutions, the two outdoor cats we have (and their friends from next door) no longer attempt to use the flower beds as a lavatory.

They work
These are just flimsy plastic mats with spikes on them, but they do work. The spikes are long enough and strong enough to deter cats from getting on things you want them away from. I leave them on my porch furniture when we're not using them. And we cut one to fit on top of a bluebird house because a neighborhood cat kept climbing on it after the babies.

Keeps the cats on their toes
Attached these to the top of my fence to keep the feral cats from using it as a highway to hold their irritatingly loud trysts in my backyard. I did have to cut them to size to fit the fence and used old sticks to wedge them in place. Easy to cut. They work great with some hot sauce on top.Update: the mats are still going strong. I am updating to suggest using E6000 glue to hold the mat in place on the fence if that is your use for them. The sticks were not working to hold in place. I drizzled globs of glue on a few posts.
