Satisfying novella!
The posh hotel in Manhattan was where the man waited – his contact was late, much too late – and he didn’t feel the eyes on him while he sat there. Much later Detective Michael Bennett was called to the scene of a suspected suicide. The construction site beside the posh Manhattan hotel now housed a body which had quite obviously fallen from the heights of the roof beside it. An obvious suicide – but was it?When forensics discovered several anomalies, Bennett was bemused. But worse was to come. What they had found was not possible – so Bennett set out on the trail. But out there were people determined to keep the secrets of the past from being revealed – any way possible.Chase is #9.5 in the Michael Bennett series by James Patterson, and is one in the BookShots series. I enjoyed it but not quite as much as the usual fare with this detective. The full length novels obviously have more space for detail – and though this novella was rounded nicely, I felt more detailed action would have been great in this particular case. I still recommend to lovers of the Bennett series, and am very much looking forward to #9 which will be out soon!

I have always liked to read Patterson’s NYPD Detective Michael Bennett’s exciting adventures
CHASE by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. I have always liked to read Patterson’s NYPD Detective Michael Bennett’s exciting adventures. This novella or bookshot manages to keep the reader alert and turning pages. Our hero, Bennett is sent to investigate what at first appears to be a suicidal jumper from the seventh floor of New York’s Index House Hotel. There is no ID on the guy. The ME extracts the finger prints and it turns out the body is identified as an Air force pilot who had been declared dead years earlier from an aircraft crash in Iraq. Also as the ME works on the body she discovers a condom containing a note with a group of numbers. The bad guys, highly trained professional killers, come after Michael Bennett with a vengeance as he pursues answers in this weird apparent murder. My only criticism is that the story was too short—I wanted more. Chase makes for an enjoyable long-lunch or evening read. I give the story a 5-star rating.

The best Patterson book shot
I have read, and listened to Patterson books for many years now. I am glad to see something with just his name on it as the collaboration books are not as good as his solo books. The narrative by what I guess is a native New Yorker ( been there 5 times in last 2 years) is pleasant to my ear.The diction is clear and the reading is done with feeling. The storyline involves one of Patterson set piece characters, (in a growing number of books) a New York police detective investigating a murder. The storyline suffers because of the lack of detail in a short story and it is easy to imagine this having been a real book, then cut way back to this format as I cannot see something so disjointed actually being written on purpose. That said, it filled a couple of hours for me in the car. As a book, I guess I could go through it in half the time.Overall, one of the better book shots that I have listened to (9)

Oh dear not so much a chase as a plod
There is a skill to writing short stories, a good one can pull the trade along to the finish in no time feeling just as happy as if they had read a full story. A bad one however leaves the reader feeling he has wanted his time and dissatisfied. This is the 3rd bookshots I have read and I lived the other 2, the Alex Cross bookshots is a prime example of how a short story should be. This however fails, it's a good enough story but it leaves more questions than answers, the mystery side is fine and an engaging tale. It's all just too easy and leaves many questions unanswered, far too many locations, far too many two dimensional characters. It would have made a great full length story with time being given to the many characters and their motivation. I would have loved to have the relationship between Bennett and the hunters to be fully explored and not glossed over, the old man's motivation for helping Bennett was just too twee, a missed opportunity.I will be buying more bookshots, in fact I have already started the next one and have another on order. I love the format and fully accept that not all will hit the spot, I just wish this one had been up to the standard of the other two.
