Q: Will this give accurate readings of ambient air temperature?

Yes, but you would have to have the tip off of a table or whatever that might be a different temperature and hold it in your hand by the dial. All of these are able to be calibrated. Put in a cup of ice and set the dial to 33°.

Q: What country is this made in?

The company Supco is located in Bronx, NY at Supco.com, had it awhile, still works well if that helps.

Q: can this be calibrated by nut on back for rotating dial?

I believe so. There is a nut on the back, but I haven't had to recalibrate mine yet.

Q: What is the diameter of the stem? I've got a 3/16" hole that I'd like it to fit into

The one I have measures .150", so it should easily fit into a 3/16" hole which is .1875".
