The Early Church

History you won't find anywhere else
One of the best books on the subject. Reveals how Catholics got their filthy hands on the gospel and perverted it, killing off their adversaries and telling lies to cover it up.

Helpful overview of the early church
Unlike many history books, this does not get bogged down in a endless repetition of names and dates. Those elements are there, but Chadwick keeps the story moving and provides helpful analysis along the way. This is written in a less "devotional style" than other Christian histories I've read; it reads more as straight up history. The major themes he tackles throughout the book are: How much discontinuity or continuity exists between Israel and the church? How is authority to be determined? What is the proper relationship between the church and culture? To this is added the widening gulf between east and west. The two areas in which this book proved most helpful for me was coming to a greater understanding of the (long) process by which the church defined their belief in Jesus' divinity, and the way that the eastern and western half of the church developed into such different entities that they finally split apart.I'd recommend this as a good starting point with the early church, especially if you are interested in the historical narrative and not just devotional stories. Michael Holmes' translation of the Apostolic Fathers would pair nicely, giving you some primary documents to illustrate what Chadwick is saying. It's one thing to read about Clement; it's another to actually read him for yourself!

Somewhat outdated, but still an excellent introduction
Some of the scholarship here is a bit outdated (for instance, the contention that Eusebius of Caesara and St. Epiphanius of Salamis were proto-iconoclasts has been thoroughly dismantled in recent years) but this is still the standard and the classic text on early Christian history, covering roughly the period of the Apostolic Fathers (late first century) to the Seventh Ecumenical Council (eight century) and introducing all of the major themes of Church history along the way, including theology, liturgy, art, major figures, etc. The focus throughout is primarily on Western Christianity but the author is also familiar with Eastern practice and generally takes a balanced approached. If anyone is interested in learning more about Church history but has very little knowledge of it already, this book is an excellent place to start.
