Roll The Bones: The History of Gambling (Casino Edition)

Dr. Dave has written a truly comprehensive historical account of gambling. He tells his narrative in a way that really guides the reader through the detailed historical context while also drawing relevant connections between the past and the present. If you are interested in gambling and want an informative guide to the origins of gambling to the current gambling culture, this is a must read.

This book is comprehensive and although long, is written in a way which engages the reader. It is refreshing to see a book which looks at gaming as it developed in Europe and other parts of the world. Many books look to closely or only at America. Although the American contribution to gaming is well examined it takes a more worldly view, the end result is a far more complete view of the topic.

Very readable and entertaining book that doesn't skimp on factual information. David Schwartz is the head of the UNLV Center for Gaming Research and we're fortunate to be able to read a lot of his work in the local media. One of the best writers covering the gaming industry and Las Vegas working today.

This is the best book I’ve ever read on gambling. Incredibly detailed and interesting.

I was hesitant to re-read the second edition. The first had been a good (if a bit academically toned) read. I'm glad I did. Great updates, much more recent and current content. Better than the first edition.

Fun to read, this fine work will appeal to anyone interested in gambling or Las Vegas history. Dr. Schwartz strikes a perfect balance between serious and quirky in this delightful book. His heavyweight credentials as a gambling historian come through but are never flaunted for their own sake. Highly recommended!

Great book for a history of gambling from biblical times to the present. A number of typos and printing errors were noticed but did not distract from the read. David does a great job of pulling it all together in an interesting read, as well. Recommended for the gaming student and casual reader.

It concentrates too much on the history of gambling, ranging from 14th century Italy right up to Vegas and online games. Good book, but too specific.
