Think twice
Think twice.I'm that guy who thinks brakes and suspension from the factory is typically sub-par and typically has all 4 corners upgraded when I buy a used vehicle. Such was the case for the 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 I bought last summer. Because this vehicle was to be a safe vehicle for my daughters to drive when they come home from college, I immediately had a major service done and replaced the wheels, tires, shocks and the front and rear brakes with the EBC rotor and pad kits along with a thorough brake line flushing and new fluid.I couple of months after having everything installed, I experienced SEVERE brake fade coming down a grade. I hadn't felt fade this bad since my days with drum brakes! I'm not sure my daughters would have been able to stop the truck at the bottom of the grade as I found myself rapidly coming down on a big rig giving it everything I had to stop (picture Fred Flintstone with his heels dug into the road!). I immediately took the truck back down to my mechanic who said (with cool brakes by then) everything checked out fine. I wrote to EBC to complain and they did send me a set of replacement pads for the front while not having an explanation for what could have gone wrong.Fast forward to a couple of days ago... now 18000 miles since the brakes were first installed. My daughter is complaining of a grinding sound in the brakes and I take a peek through the wheels to see the right front rotor is so carved out that it looks like it's is eating itself. Back down to the mechanic I go. I've never had brakes wear out so fast in 40 years of driving so I didn't even consider that. I thought somehow the caliper got tweaked or something foreign wedged itself in there but my mechanic called to inform me the brakes were just plum worn out. In fact, he said, the left side was down to less than 1mm to match. If you can deal with replacing both your brakes and rotors every 18K miles in a non-performance car or truck and you can deal with brake fade occasionally, by all means give this kit a go. For me it's a no-go... and unfortunately a no-stop either.I should also mention, there's no early warning wear indicator on the pads either. If there was, I might have been able to save the rotors instead of relegating them to boat anchors along with the pads. I'm sure there they will have a better chance at stopping my boat faster than they did my truck! lolSorry EBC... Never again.
