Clashes: Air Combat over North Vietnam, 1965-1972

Clashes deals with the air war over North Vietnam, something I've had a fascination with for some time. Why, because I wanted to understand why servicemen were put into a dangerous position and what did really happen. To help answer this, Col. Michel takes on the entire air war over North Vietnam (Rolling Thunder, Linebacker I, and Linebacker II). Rather than looking at it from the cockpit view (ala  Thud Ridge: F-105 Thunderchief missions over Vietnam  or  When Thunder Rolled ), Col. Michel takes us up to the operations level and provides a good high level breakdown of many of the raids and the engagements between fighters and the North Vietnamese air defenses. The book is divided into two parts (Rolling Thunder and Linebacker) with subsections focusing on different components (both parts use equipment used, early engagements, later engagements, and summary). In each of subsection, Col. Michel does a very good job describing what is occurring and what the Americans and North Vietnamese are doing. In addition to describing engagements, Col. Michel does a great job describing the involvement of EC-121's (College Eye/Disco) and Red Crown (a naval ship controlling the fighters) and their impact on the fight. Unlike other history's, Clashes does not name the pilots involved, rather their radio call signs are used.Parts I Loved:Clashes gives us much information about the aircraft involved, the abilities of the men flying them (their training and tactics), and the environment they're fighting in. I loved the drawings, they do an excellent job showing the differences between a fluid four and a loose deuce. I also loved Col. Michel including the technical aspects; performance test of captured MiG's, the Command and Control aspect (often overlooked), and the power and effect of jamming.Parts I Wish Were a Little Stronger:Iron Hand missions were a little on the weak side. I have a love and fondness for Wild Weasels and wish that more had been brought out about their support of the missions and how they operated (I'm sorry, this was weak in comparison to the attention paid to Chaff bombers). I also wish more had been brought out about rescue missions and the work they did there.Bottom LineRating wise, this is a very solid 4.5 star book. I am giving it the node to 5 for Amazon purposes, but for my personal rating I can't rate it up there with  Fire in the Sky: The Air War in the South Pacific  by Eric Bergerud (I'm sorry, Fire in the Sky is my personal favorite or telling the story of an air war. Clashes though is right behind it!). I understand why Col. Michel focused heavily on the air-to-air engagements and for the insight he provides there this a solid 5 star book. No matter, if you want to know about the Vietnam Air War (mainly in Pack's 5 and 6), then this is the book for you.

Clashes by Marshall Michel is a very well done piece of history about a relatively specific but important slice of combat history. Although there is sufficient examination of the air to ground srtikes against the north during the Vietnam war this book is not about the overall use of airpower in Vietnam but focuses on the air to air engagements between USAF F-4's / F-105's and USN F-4's / F-8's versus North Vietnamese Mig-21's, -19's and -17's during operations Rolling Thunder and Linebacker. The author provides greatly appreciated context of what was happening in the larger war as he chronologically progresses through the air battles, and he also connects the day to day design of the bombing campaigns to the overall strategy being pursued by the White House and Joint Chiefs of Staff.The author clearly has done a large amount of research into the subject matter and he successfully draws a large number of pertinent conclusions from it. What emerges is a pretty illuminating and frankly fascinating comparison of Air Force, Navy and North Vietnamese technology and tactics, and how they all evolved and interacted throughout the long war in response to the enemy and in response to fluid domestic political and strategic influences.Many striking facts are highlighted and explained in this book. The extremely poor performance of US air to air missiles, stark differences in USAF and USN tactics and training (and institutional flexibility), the effects of fighter design on engagements, and the particularly large impact of IFF, effective radio communications, and coordination in winning those engagements. The book ends with a quick survey of how the lessons of the Vietnam air war impacted the design and employment of the F-14, F-15 and E-3 aircraft.Great book for anyone who wants to understand the nature, details, and consequences of the air to air war over North Vietnam. Highly recommended to military aircrews and officers, as well as aircraft and weapons systems designers and engineers.As a last note this is another satisfying read from the Naval Institute Press, which really does seem to consistently publish very high quality, timely books.

Not so much a story but more of a documentary of the fighter engagements during the war over North Vietnam. It compares USAF and Navy fighter training and effectiveness of each service in air battles during the war. It documents loses on both sides. It also highlights the many failures of the rockets used by all F-4's and the need for a gun on that aircraft for many close range engagements.

A history book that's a page turner.

Unlike the vast majority of books I have read and that claim to cover air operations Michel's book really does it.The book is based on de-classified US material and provide a deep insight on all aspects one can possibly ask for. He examine the tactics and formations used by the North Vietnamese AF, USAF and the US Navy. He also analyse the aircrafts and the weapons and provide lots of material regarding the poor performance of the AA-missiles used by both side.If you really want to understand the air combat over North Vietnam - this is where to begin.I wish other writers would copy Michel's concept.

This book is about arial combat over North Vietnam, not so much about the bombing campaigns Rolling Thunder and Linebacker. A special focus is on the lessons (re-) learned by the US forces - close range combat. This includes the experiences with AIM-7 and AIM-9 missiles and the missed kill opportunities since guns were not available in F-4s before the advent of the F-4E variant. And of course air combat training of crews. The bottom line is, that US Navy did a better job than the Air Force ("Top Gun" was initiated by the Navy, not the AF), reflected in the kill rations of both services.Absolutely recommended!

La guerre aérienne menée par les Etats-Unis au-dessus du Nord-Viêtnam pendant la guerre du Viêtnam, entre 1965 et 1972, est souvent relayée au second plan des analyses au profit de ses implications politiques, en dehors des fameux bombardements de 1972 sur Hanoï qui auraient précipité les communistes à la conclusion des accords de Paris de janvier 1973. Le constat est particulièrement valable pour l'opération Rolling Thunder (1965-1968), symbole pour beaucoup de la "riposte graduée" de l'administration Johnson, en totale opposition avec les opérations Linebacker montées par l'administration Nixon en 1972. Marshall L. Michel, ancien pilote de F-4 au Viêtnam et retraité comme colonel en 1992, lui, pense que la guerre aérienne au-dessus du Nord-Viêtnam a été l'aspect le plus important du conflit et que leçons qui en ont été tirées côté américain ont été décisives dans le cadre de la guerre froide et de l'hypothèse d'une confrontation en Europe avec les Soviétiques - et ce bien plus que la dimension terrestre de la guerre au Sud-Viêtnam.Etats-Unis et URSS ont pu tester ici les matériels les plus récents : F-4 Phantom contre SA-2 et chasseurs MiG guidés par radar. La guerre aérienne au-dessus du Nord-Viêtnam a été la première guerre aérienne "moderne" où les missiles ont joué le rôle principal. Les SA-2 ont représenté l'essentiel de la défense anti-aérienne de Hanoï et les Américains ont été obligés de développer d'imposants systèmes de contre-mesure électroniques pour y faire face, les SAM prélevant parfois un lourd tribut sur les appareils américains -comme au début de Linebacker II. Les tactiques développées contre les SAM ont rendu les avions des Etats-Unis vulnérables aux autres armes des communistes, les MiG, dès la fin de 1966. Pour la première fois, les Américains ont en fait affronté un système de défense antiaérienne intégré sur le modèle soviétique.Les combats air-air se sont révélés une épreuve encore plus décisive, car mettant en lumière les problèmes liés aux appareils, aux compétences des pilotes, aux missiles... à l'époque de la guerre du Viêtnam, les combats aériens ont commencé à changer de nature : les dogfights de la guerre de Corée laissent place aux tirs de missiles à guidage infrarouge ou radar, et les chasseurs comme le F-4 Phantom II n'embarquent plus de canon interne. Les premières confrontations mettent en lumière la faible fiabilité des missiles américains, et forcent à des solutions improvisées pour embarquer des canons. Cependant les Américains réagissent et sont capables, dans les premiers mois de 1967, d'imposer des pertes sévères aux MiG nord-viêtnamiens, les rayant pour ainsi dire du ciel. Cependant les MiG apprennent, s'adaptent, changent leurs tactiques et profitent de leur guidage par le radar au sol : fin 1967 et jusqu'à la fin de Rolling Thunder, les MiG nord-viêtnamiens abattent 5 appareils de l'USAF pour chacun des leurs perdu. Les deux branches de l'armée américaine réagissent différemment : l'USAF cherche des solutions technologiques, alors que l'US Navy met en place un nouveau programme d'entraînement au combat aérien, Top Gun (1969). Lorsque se déclenche la première offensive Linebacker, en mai 1972, les efforts portent leurs fruits : les F-4 rivalisent beaucoup mieux avec les MiG. Cependant ceux-ci innovent à leur tour, se focalisant contre les appareils de l'USAF dès juin et provoquant le même résultat que pendant Rolling Thunder, un renversement, jusqu'à la fin de l'opération en octobre. En décembre, les MiG ne s'opposent pas vraiment aux raids nocturnes de B-52, mais prouvent encore qu'ils tiennent la dragée haute aux F-4. A la fin de la guerre, personne ne peut oser prétendre que les Américains ont conquis la supériorité aérienne au-dessus du Nord-Viêtnam. Ce n'est qu'à la suite de cette expérience que l'USAF développera, comme l'US Navy avant elle, un programme d'entraînement adapté pour ses pilotes.Le livre de Marshall se concentre évidemment du côté américain, mais fournit des précisions intéressantes sur l'adversaire nord-viêtnamien. Il met bien en lumière les problèmes liés à l'emploi des missiles AIM-9 Sidewinder et AIM-7 Sparrow dans les conditions climatiques et de combat particulières de la guerre du Viêtnam ainsi que ceux liés à leur emploi dans le cockpit des appareils américains. On comprend mieux ainsi la frustration des pilotes américains de F-4 qui doivent laisser filer des MiG en raison d'une défaillance de leur armement. Plus généralement, il souligne également le mépris par l'USAF de l'adversaire et le manque de formation criant, au départ, des équipages de F-4 Phantom au combat aérien, Air Force et Navy confondues -même si cette dernière tire son épingle du jeu avec l'expérience des pilotes de F-8. Le MiG-21 nord-viêtnamien est une très mauvaise surprise pour les Américains, parvenant rapidement à se transformer d'un intercepteur conçu pour contrer les bombardiers à un appareil engagé en combat tournoyant. Marshall consacre aussi beaucoup de pages à décrire les efforts américains en matière de guerre électronique pour contrer la défense anti-aérienne nord-viêtnamienne (pods de brouillage, interrogateur IFF, etc). Le livre met surtout en exergue la différence de comportement entre l'USAF et l'US Navy et la rivalité interservices qui se manifeste encore à ce moment-là. La première ne cherche la réponse aux difficultés que dans des solutions technologiques, avec des succès finalement très mitigés. La Navy met au point Top Gun et se contente d'améliorer le missile AIM-9 Sidewinder ce qui lui permet d'obtenir de biens meilleurs résultats pendant Linebacker, en 1972.Si la Navy valide les choix faits pendant la guerre à la fin du conflit, il faudra attendre la fin des années 70 pour que l'USAF commence à se poser les bonnes questions et à porter un regard critique sur sa performance au Viêtnam, notamment parce que les pilotes ayant combattu sur place arrivent à des postes de responsabilité. La question d'un programme d'entraînement utilisant enfin le Dissimilar Air Combat Training (entraînement utilisant des appareils américains aux performances similaires à ceux des Soviétiques pour simuler l'ennemi) sont alors abordées. L'USAF crée le squadron des Agresseurs, puis le programme Red Flag dans le Nevada. Elle adopte également la formation à deux appareils "loose deuce" de l'US Navy, qui a fait ses preuves, au détriment du "fluid four" à 4 avions. Enfin, de nouveaux appareils sont conçus pour doter l'aviation de combat américaine de machines tirant les leçons des défauts constatés au Viêtnam. Le F-14 développé par l'US Navy a une excellente visibilité avec sa verrière en canopée ; il embarque un canon interne Vulcan M-61 de 20 mm et dispose d'un HUD ; ses ailes à géométrie variable lui permettent le combat tournoyant à basse altitude et son radar à impulsions Doppler lui autorise à distinguer les cibles au ras du sol. Le F-14 conserve un RIO, un dispositif qui a montré son utilité sur le F-4 au Viêtnam. Le F-15 développé par l'USAF dispose des mêmes qualités, avec une motorisation supérieure, et d'un radar APG-63 à capacité look down-shoot down qui avait grandement manqué au F-4. C'est aussi à la lumière de l'expérience viêtnamienne qu'est créé le E-3 Sentry AWACS, si familier aujourd'hui.Peut-on penser, comme Michel, que la guerre aérienne est le seul volet décisif pour l'art de la guerre pendant la guerre du Viêtnam ? Peut-être pas. Cependant, force est de reconnaître que son ouvrage a l'immense mérite de remettre les pendules à l'heure sur ce qui demeure, pour beaucoup, une victoire des Etats-Unis. Cette saine lecture convaincra le Français passionné par la question que ce fut loin d'être le cas.

Si sólo podeis comprar un libro sobre esta temática, elegid este. Sin ninguna duda el mejor libro sobre combate aéreo en Vietnam del Norte que he tenido nunca. Profusamente ilustrado con diagramas, fotografías, mapas, formaciones de ataque... y mucho más que no desvelaré. Altamente recomendable, y con el más que buén precio y calidad de envío de Amazon.es, razón de más para adquirirlo sin pensárselo. Otra gran obra del Naval Institute Press.
