Great reference
Wow. That was a lot of work! This is a terrific reference piece for the facts that it contains but also as a humbling reminder of how much was done and how far robot designers had come before this current burst of robotic design activity. The really curious reaction is what happened and why? As designers we have clearly benefited from the advent of new technology which has allowed us to spring forward with capabilities and actions that could not be achieved in the time period that Bart's book describes, - but many of the principles and applications were sound back then and it reads like many of the bot's only needed fine tuning . What happened? And are there lessons to be learned for this cycle of design activity? Bart's book is an excellent foundation to explore that and many other historical questions as well as just be amazed at what our predecessors did with so little.

As complete an account as one might desire
This is a monumental work of historical research presented as a professional publication accessible to the casual reader. It covers everything from notional projects to deployed weapon systems, aviation to ground vehicles and sea vessels. The level of detail is od extraordinary depth but still suitable for popular publication. The reader can skin over what is not of interest to focus on what they find fascinating - and there is plenty to choose from. Extends to before WWII and after as necessary for a full account, and it seems as full as just about anyone could desire. The illustrations are complete and professionally rendered. It is a handsome book, so get it onto your shelf today!

Spectacular compendium of technology
This is a scholarly work of one-stop shopping for informationon these amazing devices. Aeronautics, torpedoes, and ground vehicles regardless of nationality are covered. There are dozens of line and patent drawings and the author is adept at explaining complicated systems in a manner digestible to non-engineers. A wonderful work worth the money.

It’s heavy!
Encyclopedia focused on the different water, air, land vehicles (hard to believe they were so many), with anecdotal description of the different projects and persons involved.

Love it!
I've been in the mobile / defense robotics industry since the 1990's and I learned things in this book I never suspected. Love it!
