[Pack of 3] House Foods Medium Hot Chinese Mabo Tofu Sauce, 5.29 Ounce

This is actually a decent product - you may want to add a few things, but in a pinch.

Decades ago, I used this sauce a couple times a month for mapo tofu. We recently ordered this dish in a local restaurant and it brought back memories. I worried about buying three boxes and being disappointed, but I shouldn't have. While made from scratch is best, this sauce is good and with a little bit of pork (or some random meat scraps from another meal, minced finely) and a box of tofu, plus something on the side, you've got a warming dinner you can put together in ten minutes on a weeknight. "Medium hot" is just the right level of heat. I admit I did kick it up a notch on the leftovers!

This makes a great meal.

"Mild hot" has almost no spice. I added two tablespoons of Chinese chili sauce to make a reasonable mabo tofu. I liked the basic flavor of the product, but it is not what I expect for mabo tofu.

Great product

Mapo tofu is one of my favorite Chinese dishes, but by the time we drive to Chinatown & do carryout (to keep costs down), we're still at almost $80. We have yet to attempt it from scratch because it contains several ingredients that we don't keep on hand which would mean a special trip to Chinatown to buy the ingredients at an affordable price. My husband came across this sauce on Amazon and the reviews seemed decent so we decided to try it. The flavor wasn't bad, but it didn't taste at all like mapo tofu. The kids ate it and had seconds. I think my taste-buds were prepared for mapo tofu, so I didn't enjoy it. We won't be ordering this product again. My husband is going to break down and get the necessary ingredients to make it from scratch when we don't feel like spending the money for a restaurant. I gave it 3 stars since I didn't think the flavor was bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all. I also didn't feel that the spice level was medium-hot. I'd call it mild-medium, with an emphasis on mild.

I used it with pork and tofu although I had to use two packets it was yummy

No complaints. Product is as advertised, reasonably priced, packed carefully by seller, arrived on time, and best of all very tasty prepared with soft tofu and served with hot jasmine rice on side.
