A Unique Approach To Looking At Training!
I'm a certified fitness professional who has been involved in fitness for well over 25 years (I'm in my fifties). Even after all these years of training I am always on the lookout for great information and read everything I can get my hands on that can help me expand my base of knowledge!Every once in a while you come across a book that is really looking at things thru a 'different window' and Pure Physique is such a book!Rather than just being a bunch of one-size-fits-all generic workouts, it approaches fitness, in particular hypertrophy training, from a standpoint of stress physiology and individualism.Instead of the 'more is better' approach it is centered on the notion of 'the LEAST amount NECESSARY' to stimulate a positive adaptation. This doesn't mean it is minimalistic or bound by any specific dogma, but rather the key is to start by doing less overall work, evaluate your progress, and then if you need to add more you do so.However, that 'less' does not mean less effort, in fact you may find you will need to bring a greater amount of overall INTENSITY OF EFFORT for each exercise. Doing so allows you to remove any superfluous work which may be counterproductive. By doing this you create a strong enough stimulus without compromising your ability to maximally recover between workouts.Much of the philosophy behind the book is based on the 'General Adaptation Syndrome', the notion that you don't need to just compensate but OVERcompensate in order to get maximum benefits! This has profoundly influenced how I'm currently training. In my personal workouts, I have reduced my workout time by 15-20 minutes (or more) and I'm getting incredible results! With my busy training schedule (both boot camps and personal training) my body is already being subjected to a lot of stress so being able to make my workouts more efficient and less costly energetically is allowing me to reap great rewards without feeling drained all the time. Now I do want to clarify that this is not a book for someone who wants to learn the basic exercises, there aren't exercise descriptions or workouts. There are tons of books out there like that (such as 'The Max Muscle Plan' by Brad Schoenfeld which is excellent), but 'Pure Physique' is a book that will get you thinking about training in a different way.Additionally there are excellent sections on nutrition and mindset!HIGHLY recommended!

Good But Not Great
I was really looking forward to reading this book because, based on previous reviews, it seemed to be geared more towards those interested in achieving a particular look. Although I did learn a good bit from the book, I have no clue how to put any of the information into action. One issue that was mentioned was the fact that even though you may only work each body part one day a week (shoulders for example), that body part may still be involved in exercises performed for other parts on different days. This becomes an issue because certain parts may not be getting adequate rest in between workouts. I would have liked to have seen a sample one week workout plan demonstrating how to address this issue as well as how to apply all of the principles discussed. I do agree with the reviewer who said that this book reads more along the lines of a textbook. It's not the most fun book to read but I wasn't look for an entertaining book. I wanted a book that would teach me something. Hopefully the author is considering an updated version with a sample workout plan.
