The Blue Max Airmen Volume 8: German Airmen Awarded the Pour le Mérite

I have studied World War One aviation for many years and consequently have read many books. This series of books are meticulously researched and the information is well-organized. The aircraft profiles are excellent! I am in the process of acquiring every volume for my library. I highly recommend this series to anyone interested in World War One aviation in particular, the German airmen that were awarded the Blue Max, the Pour Le Merite.

Hard to believe that 8 volumes only gets us about a third of the way through the stories of the Pour La Merite winners

Beyond good

Very interesting

Great series on German Pour le Merit holders from WW1. Great pictures and color aircraft profiles.

Like the other books in this series, this volume is rather uneven in quality. While the author has found some new photographs, there are still serious gaps - in this case. particularly with coverage of the final stage of Lothar von Richthofen's combat career in the summer of 1918. It is also unfortunate that (again as is the case with some of his other volumes) he has not stepped out of the shadow of the "Under the Guns of..." books' coverage of his subject's combat successes, meaning that you really need to have both books to form a balanced view. The Gontermann section is generally better - not least because his career has not been covered in any depth by earlier authors.

As with the previous volumes, excellent edition. Well illustrates, good documentation. Highly recommenced.
