These slip of my bars when I am using them had to put thin packing between them and the bar

I train at home and while the family is still asleep and I love these because they are super-quiet, easy to operate, and effective. My kids are also starting to lift and they find these easy to use (and so are more likely to use them - I can do without someone dropping a plate on themselves!) The collars grip tightly, fully securing the plates, and not once have I worried, or witnessed, any slippage. I suppose, for completeness, I should add that I mostly use them on bars, which tend to be horizontal on all the lifts, making slippage unlikely, even without the collars. Because I train alone however I use the collars in case I make a mistake or there is an accident, like mis-racking the bar, or something (most likely me!) fails. The worry is that the bar then tilts sufficiently before I can compensate that a plate might slip off, and the collars help to minimise this. I do also use these with dumbbell handles - both "smooth" and spinlock. There seems to be no reasonable way they would slip over the added resistance of the thread of the spinlock handles but even on the smooth handles they have been rock solid. Sometimes I use them to just "lock" the spinlock nut in place so it doesn't slowly unscrew (which is a little irritating). I can imagine that possibly things might be a little different if you happen to use heavily loaded "smooth" dumbbell handles which might be held more vertically at some point of the lift (think hammer curls) such that all the weight of the bottom-most loaded plates is transferred from the dumbbell handle to the collar, but the grip of these collars is exceptional and I suspect that most people using dumbbells for these sorts of exercises will be using an amount of weight that these collars could hold. They are nearly all plastic but they feel robust enough and while I would have preferred a metal option (a bit "old-school" that way), that would have hiked up the price I'm sure and I would probable lose a bit of it's quietness. Get a pair - they're a nice addition to a home gym, quick and quiet, and I'd absolutely recommend.
