Great book
This is really a great book. Give great info about the how and why of how numbers work. For a person who never was very good at math this book has taught me so much and boosted my confidence with math.

Applied some techniques after the first couple of chapters!
This is a fun read so far - I've been able to apply some estimation techniques after just the first few pages. This is a fun way to get more efficient at figuring. Her own joy for numbers and mental number manipulation techniques comes shining through. I had to wait a long time for the book to come into stock... it was worth the wait.

Math patterns playfully presented
Shakuntala Devi presentes math patterns in an interesting, accessible and playful manner. I teach elementary math to teachers, and I think I'll use these chapters to start their math minds working at the beginning of our sessions. I think they might do that with students as well.

Very simple, yet very deep...
Although the whole book is excellent, the multiplication chapter is the crowning achievement. Shakuntala teaches you how to cross multiply any two numbers in a very simple, straightforward way that is easy to learn and easy to do. And if you already know how to do Chisanbop (Fingermath), you will have a very powerful tool to do large multiplication problems without paper or pencil. She also does a ton of good stuff with all the other basic arithmatical operations. An great book that should be part of anyone's math library.

A blast from the past
My parents bought me the first edition of this book back in the 70s after Shakuntala Devi appeared on the BBC's Blue Peter. I still must have it somewhere stored in a box. So after maybe 50 years, a successful career and two young kids I bought this reprint. It's as fresh as the day I first got my hands on it in the 70s. Delightfully written and a superb introduction to numbers for children and anyone else who is interested.
