The reproductions of Alber’s paintings are extensive and detailed. For me, the real highlight of this book is Jeannette Redensek’s essay “Farbenfabeln: On the Origins and Development of the ‘Homage to the Square’”. The complete technical process of making Alber’s squares is detailed, from initial sketches, measurements, colour patches and samples, selecting paint brands and mixing, preparing grounds, painting the squares (without masks, completely freehand with palette knives!), varnishes, titles, information on the backs of canvases, etc etc. This kind of exploration of technical skills is quite rare in these kinds of books. For me, an amateur art historian and a weekend painter, this kind of thing is extraordinary. If you admire post-Modernism, Colour Field Painting, or artistic variations on a theme, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
