The Black Stallion's Sulky Colt

I've always liked Walter Farley books.

This book is a part of the Black Stallion series, but it is not about the Black, it is about his sulky racing colt. Also, like all of Mr Farley's books it can be read as a stand alone, but I suggest you read all the books in order just to get a good history.This is sulky racing "tail sitting" at its finest. The colt is a great horse, but faces many challenges. Henry and Alex come to the aid of the horse, it's rider,it's trainer and it's seasoned owner. Want to learn how they help and go on to the top sulky races in the country.... well read the book and enjoy the ride.

Another great adventure with Henry Daily and Alec Ramsay - this time they stray into harness racing to help an old friend and a son of The Black. The racing scenes are exciting and Alec has retained his big heart even with all he's been through in his relatively short life. This book fits in well with the series as a whole, and hasn't lost any of its magic through the years since it was released. It only loses one star from me for some of the conflict between characters which feels a little heavy handed.

It's my second reading in 64 years. It was as pleasurable this time as it was the first. As an educator, I believe that it is very important for us to read and review books that our children and grandchildren will be reading for both pleasure and the classroom. In this case, pleasure won. Discussion at the dinner table will be very interesting!

If you are a horse fan and want to know as much as you can about everything related to horses you will love the information gleened from Farley's story about a Sulky racing son of the black. Farley has a timeless way of making it seem like the fairs still run today as they were in the 50's and 60's. It also shows the difference in older generations compared to the younger ones and how they can still respect each other and get along. All in all, not my favorite out of the Black Stallion set, but I still enjoyed the read.

My grandchildren are enjoying these books so much. They loved that they reading books that their grandfather read as a child. So far amazon has had every book in the series

A fine follow-up to the previous book with the Blood Bay Colt, son of the Black. Glad to see Alec and Henry make an appearance as well. Mr Farley doesn't disappoint.

I bought these books for my wife who was a huge Black Stallion fan as a kid. They arrived in a very short time and she has read two already.

My children have enjoyed all of the Black Stallion books, this one included. Arrived in a timely manner.

This gripping story is a step away from track horseback racing. The story is played out on a different track - of harness racing. Tom hangs about in the harness racing stables doing anything, just to be with the horses which he loves. Jimmy has bred Bonfire, the blood bay colt and waits to teach him to be a racer in harness. With many years experience behind him, Jimmy hopes that Bonfire will prove himself to be a top class racer. Unfortunately Jimmy's health means he is unable to train the colt himself, so he chooses Tom to do it for him. Training is under Jimmy's strict instructions and is agonising slow for Tom, who is a natural racer, along with the colt. What do you know about harness racing? Like me probably nothing, so alongside the colt and Tom you will learn. Is the colt a winner? Read the book and see!
