The Awesome Night Sky (World of Wonder)

Outstanding non fiction primer on the night sky for circa 4-8 year olds.
I like this nonfiction series from Kay Barnham illustrated by Maddison Frost which depict a pair of adventurous friends exploring the natural world a theme at a time. Here our friends are exploring the science behind the night sky from stars to meteors, moon phases to moon landings and the inevitable 'where's Pluto' conversation with many adults unaware of its downgrading! The text is detailed without being too obvious you're learning, it's just feels like the friends are telling you what they've found out and is a great jumping off point for unit studies and developing a love of non-fiction books too. My 5 year old really enjoyed this and read it aloud to me (she is a capable reader) only asking for some confirmation on words she was unsure of sounding out phonetically like meteor showing that other than the necessary scientific language the text is simple and accessible whether read independently or to a group of young children. This is perfect as a topic starter at EYFS or Key stage 1 but could be accessible into early key stage 2 especially for differentiation or reluctant readers of non fiction.Highly recommended, especially for the gorgeous illustrations.

I learnt something new too!
My four year old was transfixed as I read it to her. She could see the pages over my arm and she was really taking it in when I pointed the parts out to her that were being explained. I thought it would go over her head and she would go off and do something else, but she absolutely loved it. This book really is learning made fun. The illustrations are lovely and really add to the information, while the language is accessible as new concepts are introduced and explained simply.Highly recommended!

Informative and well illustrated.
This is a lovely book able to be read by the child or easily read to a younger child with lots of discussion points and so on coming up - my 5 year old has enjoyed having it read to them and has definitely learnt more about the night sky and universe.Great engaging illustrations as well.
