This device is simple and definitely works for splitting wood into kindling. I attached it with screws to some scrap lumber so it's more stable. Very loud when using but then again, to use it you have to literally hammer a piece of wood into some metal so it's to be expected that it's pretty loud; wear hearing protection.

Works exactly as expected. I had some oak firewood delivered, but many of the split pieces were still quite large. This makes quick work out of the large pieces, easily make kindling as well. Note, I am using my own 4lb mini sledge hammer. The one that comes with this is not as heavy.

Why on earth does this come with a small metal mallet???? My boys (old enough to be working so mind your business) were having a hard time not hitting the splitter with the mallet when the log split. Thinking they had some more maturing to do I tried it and had the same issue. We switched to a quality rubber mallet I already had. It worked as good if not better and stopped hitting and dulling the blade of the splitter. Otherwise the splitter works well. I like the freedom of not having the guard on it like I saw on other brands.

This splitter does what it's supposed to do, but...the hammer that comes with it is too light. I'd recommend a 4# hammer, instead. Also, the metal is too soft. It's very easy to put a major gouge in the cutting edge. However, it does allow you to split wood or shave off kindling from a larger piece of wood without swinging a sharp axe near your fingers!

I lag bolted this splitter to a large stump. Our hard maple is seasoned a year and, as you can see in the photos, the splitter handles large pieces of very hard wood with ease. The small sledge works good breaking smaller pieces into kindling. The large pieces required a 4 lbs. sledge.Definitely a nice addition to our wood splitting repertoire.

This is great for smaller kindling splitting, just be careful about larger pieces of wood. This is a heavy and sharp piece of equipment, and it is pretty convenient when hammering down on the wood to split from the base. Its a little light for larger splitting, but for its purpose in smaller splitting it does great.

The metal mallet should be a minimum of 4 lbs if you intend to chop anything over an couple inches diameter, in which case a hand axe is cheaper and easier to use.I tried splitting a lot cut from a 3 inch oak branch that had been out for over a year and it would have produced the same results if I placed it under a butter knife
