Parrots in Aviculture: A Photo Reference Guide

The purpose of this book, as titled, is to exist as a photo reference guide. I have found it to be nearly perfectly sufficient. It covers the majority of species kept in captivity, including rarer birds, but there was a noticeable lack in some places, such as in regard to several species missing from the section "Parrotlets", which is peculiar because the guide is extensive yet the missing species of parrotlets have been kept in captivity since before the date of publication.The pictures themselves are acceptable, though some tones such as orange are washed out. For each species profile the book provides a color photograph with the following information: length, weight, origin, status, aviculture, accommodation, diet, clutch size, incubation, young in nest, sexual dimorphism, etc., etc., etc.Mrs Low has been a prolific author who has produced several species specific books for birds like macaws, caiques, lories and others. If the reader requires detailed information that would be the place to look rather than this text. It is important to note that this covers parrots in aviculture, not obscure birds that are kept wild like the kakapo--it is not a field guide.

This book is an excellent reference book to keep and to look at whenever you want information on any type of parrot kept in aviculture. Every bird had a good clear picture and a description giving length & weight as well as origin and status. She describes the appearance of the immature of each species, indicates clutch size, incubation time & fledging time if you are interested in breeding.Each species is listed under the common name, as well as the scientific name and also gives the German and Dutch common names.I have no hesitation in recommending this book to any bird lover.

I enjoy books written by Rosemary Low and this one is no exception. Color illustrations of so many world-wide parrots makes it a handy reference. Would purchase again.
