It may be a little book but every page is packed with great tips on gear and advice on techniques based on the experience of a consummate photographer. If I may add, the book is not only about practical tips for cameras, gear, and techniques. As I started to read Chapter One, I rushed through this line wanting to get to the good stuff, "compelling photography doesn't just reproduce; it tells stories, it evokes emotion, and transports your viewers to places they have never been". When I completed the book, I realized how significant this sentence was. I think this really is a repeating theme in the book with great photographic examples and advice on composition or how to make compelling images. I have read many articles and some books on graphic design and composition in art, but I think his chapter on "Creativity and Composition" is one of the very best. This is very good book!

Just ok
If you are new to photography there is some beneficial information. If you are more experienced you won’t get much from this book.

Take Better Pictures Outside
I had the chance to shoot with Dan a couple of weeks ago at sunrise up in Anchorage. We only went to a couple of spots - and they were not "glamour" spots, but instead spots where the trick was to capture the emerging light, reflections and water. It was a super session. After our session (on my flight home) I read this book, and it became much more clear to me some of the key concepts he was coaching me on. I am fairly advanced (technically) and while this book has a lot of great and useful technical information in it, I especially liked reading Dan's thoughts and concepts on what makes an interesting photograph - including framing, what to leave in the image, what to exclude, why the edges of the frame are so important, etc. What spoke to me is how he describes the art of taking the photograph.

Great reference guide
An excellent book, filled with practical advice from a pro. Includes guides to camera settings, photo composition and practical elements like how best to carry and travel with equipment. Plus it's small and light enough to carry with you.
