The Machinist

Christian Bale is one of those rare actors whose devotion to his craft goes way beyond the usual "I gained/lost ten pounds, so give me an Oscar!" stuff.No, this guy whittled himself down to the bone for "The Machinist," a movie where nothing can be trusted and nobody is what they seem. This is one of the movies that convincingly depicts what it's like to lose your mind, little by little, and director Brad Anderson fills the entire movie with a bleak, industrial feeling that makes you feel like you're locked in a dystopian nightmare.Trevor Reznik (Bale) works in a factory in Los Angeles. He hasn't slept in a whole year, and barely eats anything. He's only able to keep his life organized with post-it notes. Clocks are stuck. His sole comfort comes from the nurturing prostitute Stevie (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and his nightly visits to a restaurant to speak with the beautiful waitress Marie (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón).But strange things are happening in his life. Someone leaves a hangman game on his fridge. A coworker (Michael Ironside) loses his arm in an accident. And a mysterious new worker named Ivan (John Sharian) seems to be following Trevor everywhere -- but everyone else claims that Ivan doesn't exist. Trevor becomes convinced that a conspiracy is being built up around him, but the only way he can get to the truth is if he remembers the past...Christian Bale is the key to "The Machinist" working as a movie. He gives a brilliant performance as a man whose life and sanity have been slowly chiseled away over a year, yet he doesn't seem to realize that anything is wrong with HIM. It's painful to see an essentially nice, ordinary guy degenerate into a wild, forgetful maniac convinced that everybody is working against him.He also lost sixty pounds to do this movie, and his emaciated body and sunken eyes are just PAINFUL to watch. But you have to admire the dedication of a man who does this sort of thing for his art -- especially if he's playing Batman next.But Brad Anderson's direction is important in making that performance shine. Everything is bleak and industrial, with lots of steel, concrete and glaring fluorescent lights. Everything is filmed in a sickly grey-green color that leaves everybody looking washed out and dirty, and everything we see and hear seems slightly "off."In fact, everything has a feeling of profound WRONGNESS. Everything feels surreal and off, and the world sometimes seems to warp as Trevor drifts through it. Trevor's increasingly erratic behavior begins to reveal that the madness all centers on him, and it's only at the end that things finally snap into clarity.And yes, it's crammed with symbolism, but it's not immediately clear what some of it means. The most shocking example is when Trevor rides into the "highway to hell" funhouse, and is confronted by demons, corpses, fire and severed limbs."The Machinist" is not an easily movie to watch, but it is a brilliant one -- a bleak, bizarro film revolving around one man's guilt and madness. And Christian Bale proved through it that he is one of our greatest living actors.

Dreary bleak and dark - guilt

Some actors transform themselves with make up or prosthetics, while here Christian Bale did it through a massive diet, which is a true commitment to the role. He is hardly more than skin and bones. He plays Trevor, who claims he hasn’t slept in a year. He is a machinist in a gritty machine shop, and not liked by others. A lot has to do with his appearance and actions. He seems to be chasing something, and he is not an easy character to feel positive about. His life seems to be more and more unraveling, and we are drawn deeper into his world, which may or may not be one that is real. Yet, one feels the need to carry through with the entire film, if only to see if there is a answer to what is happening. And the plot draws a person in. It is not a film to feel good about but Trevor plays a very memorable role.

This movie does more then show you what its like to be suffering from sleep psychosis.. it actually imposes the problem on you. If your seeing it for the first time, you can expect to enjoy a movie where you really have to pay attention to every detail. A movie where you have to watch it mutiple times to unlock all the hidden riddles and nuances a intellectual piece. Christian Bale's acting is cutting edge.. no actor can pull off these complex roles like he can. The Bale factor brings this movie up to elite standards for psychological horror. The fact that Christian starves himself and really gets into his character makes the likeness of Trevor Reznik very palpable and captivating. The dark depressed mood of the film is instantuated not only by Trevor's listlessness but also by the setting of the movie in Los Angeles where Trevor works in a monotonous factory working on machines. Trevor's life is purposelessly drifting, from coffee shops to bars to whores. Something seems to be bothering Trevor and he's like a ghost haunting his abysmal surrounding with no inkling, except the mysterious notes he writes in his moments of lucid intellection amidst his hallicinations. The clues he unearths in his psychotic sleep deprived delusions, day by day in his dismay and suprise he discovers these little notes, slowly these little clues chip away at his pysche. As his repressed past that he has buried in self-defense in his sub-concious, begins eating away at him like a worm in a rotten apple. Soon Trevor can't hide anymore and he is forced to face the truth. The truth that has drove him into a year of insomnia and denial, the truth that he's not even aware of until the movie completely unfolds. This movie takes you through the unraveling of pyschological states. This movie very eloquently shows the viewer what sort of dark things lay in the sub-concious, and the power of the sub-concious to make one aware of it. The beauty of this movie is you get to feel like its happening to you. Above all else this movie is philosophically insightful if one takes it seriously, the pyschological states explored give one a unique perspective on the influence of sub-concious states and their role in dream states and concious cognitive states. The lines are blurred in this film and the checks and balances are confounded because some acts such as the one Trevor Reznik commits overwhelm the sub-concious mind, and in order to balance the system of pyschological processes the repression has to be acknowledged and come to terms with on all three levels. In the end of the movie Trevor restores that balance and finally goes to sleep. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes intelligent cinema, and can appreciate a movie that'll make you think and not just take up your time like so many other films.

J'ai vu ce film au cinéma en 2003 un grand thriller psychologique à la hauteur, à mon sens d' Alfred HitchcockMais pourquoi l'acteur principal du film n'arrive plus à dormir??Il faut attendre jusqu'à la fin du film pour comprendre pourquoi cet homme ne dors jamaisEt là, on comprend, on reste "la bouche ouverte" Waouh !!! j'adore !Ce film est aussi original qu'intense, renversant et dérangeant. Il vous colle au fauteuil. Une tétanisante prestation de Christian Bale magistrale !

PROLOG:wenn man einen Film zum zweiten Mal sieht, kennt man meistens neben der Geschichte auch die subjektive Empfindungen...und das wollte ich hier nach Jahren noch einmal an mir "probieren". Werde ich den Film jetzt nach mehr als 10 Jahren noch immer als einen der besten Thriller - OHNE dabei "klassisch" in die Richtung Suspense, Hitchcock, Film Noir und und zu gehen - "fühlen" bzw. sehen? Wird nach so langer Zeit die Geschichte anders; ich kenne ja das Ende, oder werde ich zusätzlich "profitieren"?ZUM FILM (ohne Spoiler, obwohl, auch hier, gibt es überhaupt einen Spoiler?):Es ist sehr schwierig in Deutsch die Worte zu finden, die mir in Slowenisch nur so im Kopf "herumfliegen" und "schwirren". Es ist immer eine Herausforderung, wenn ich über psychische Symptome schreibe, da bin ich eben - in meiner Umgangsprache viel stärker.Deswegen werden Sätze nicht ganz "richtig" sein, doch man kann meine Gedanken erraten, ich hoffe, auch verstehen.Christian Bale bzw. Trevor Reznik ist ein Arbeiter in einer Maschinenfarbrik. Die Arbeit ist schwer. Man sieht die Männer, wie sie die großen Maschinen bedienen. Immer wieder kommt es zu Problemen. Dann muß man die Maschine stoppen/anhalten, die Arbeit soll aber sehr schnell vorangehen. Dass sieht ziemlich gefährlich aus, die Männer gehen mit den Händen "in die Maschine/n", die alt und unverlässlich ist/sind.Reznik scheint nicht gerade in Form für solche Arbeit zu sein. Er ist so abgemagert, dass er wie ein Mensch aus dem KZ*** aussieht. Seine Freundin, die er für die Dienste bezahlt, Stevie (Jennifer Jason Leigh) sagt: "Wenn Du dünner wärst, würdest Du nicht mehr existieren"...als er bald darauf von der "Kellnerin" Maria (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón) die gleichen Worte hört, hält er inne und meint, es sei ein Déjà-vu...und wirkt dabei verstört.Die Wage in dem Badezimmer zeigt um 120 Pfund, also um 60 Kg und es geht noch runter.Trevor kann nämlich seit einem Jahr NICHT mehr schlafen."An Insomnia (Schlaflosigkeit) ist noch niemand gestorben", sagt er zu Maria, die ihn fragt, warum er jede Nacht in das Bistro kommt, dort nur Kaffee trinkt, den bestellten Kuchen lässt er liegen. Und gibt immer 20 Dollar Trinkgeld.Seine Welt ist also seit zwölf Monate anders geworden. Ob er früher Probleme gehabt hat, bleibt offen. Er erzählt ein bisschen über seine Mutter, die er sehr mochte, sein Vater war nie da, er war auch aggressiv.Er lebt in einer Wohnung, die keine persönliche Gegenstände enthält. Wenn sie da sind, sieht man sie nicht. Trevor putzt die Fliesen im Badezimmer mit der Zahnbürste, die Nacht ist dann leichter, sie geht vorüber...Seine Arbeit verichtet er nur mit größter Mühe. So wundert es nicht, dass er bei einer Maschinenwartung nicht aufpasst, sein Kollege verliert dabei die linke Hand. Miller (Michael Ironside) ist sauer, aber die Fabrik zahlt ihm eine Abfindung, so kann er vielleicht - es klingt schlimm - sogar besser leben.Nach dem Unfall sind die anderen Arbeiter von Trevor angewidert und machen keinen Hehl daraus, dass sie ihn am liebsten nie mehr sehen würden.Zwar mag ihn Stevie, die würde sogar mit P*** aufhören, wenn sie eine echte Beziehung hätten.Auch Maria mag ihn und geht mit ihrem Sohn Nicolas (Matthew Romero) zum Rummelplatz. Dort will Nicolas die Geisterbahn sehen, Route 666, bei den vielen Lichtern bekommt er einen epileptischen Anfall.Trevor wird immer einsamer, er ist sich sicher, dass ihn seine Kollegen beschatten, dass ein Mitarbeiter, Ivan (John Sharian) hinter ihm ist. Warum? Er folgt dem roten Wagen, schreibt sich das Kennzeichen auf. Die Polizei gibt ihm keine Auskünfte.In der Wohnung geschehen seltsame Dinge, er fragt seine Vermieterin, Mrs. Shrike (Anna Massey), ob sie Fremde gesehen hat...er ist misstraurisch. Wer kommt in die Wohnung, was sollen die Post-its/Klebezettel mit eigenartigen Zeichnungen?Er muß es wissen, seine Angst ist sogar größer als die nächtlichen Stunden, in denen er wach liegt. Und er die Uhr IMMER um 1:30 anschaut...Was will Ivan von ihm? Was wollen die Anderen? Und WER IST ER?MEINE GEDANKEN:ohne Fachausbildung weiß JEDE/R, dass eine Insomnie, die so lange dauert, den Körper auszehrt, was bei ihm geschehen ist, und das psychische Probleme auftretten müssen. Kein Mensch übersteht eine Schlaflosigkeit, die ein Jahr dauert, ohne ernste Zeichen einer Psychose. Natürlich hat Trevor etwas geschlafen oder, besser, gedöst, bis ihn schlimme Träume oder irgendwelche Geräusche aus dem fast komatösen Zustand erwacht haben.Man weiß nicht, ob er sich ärztliche Hilfe geholt hat. Er spricht von Joga, doch er nimmt keine Medikamente. Es scheint, er habe einfach aufgehört zu schlafen, sein Leben hat sich so verändert, dass es seinem Körper gleicht. Nur noch die Hülle...Was ist in diesem Leben die Wirklichkeit, was geschieht mit ihm? Und, was ist ein Teil seiner Müdigkeit, die ihn immer wieder in die Gefahr bringt. Er fährt unkonzentriert, bemerkt die Ampeln nicht, oder ignoriert sie.Besessen von der Theorie, dass Ivan und seine Kollegen in der Fabrik ihm schaden wollen, gerät sein Leben ganz aus den Fugen.Er halluziniert, wird verfolgt", stolpert, ist zu schwach...Ein Wahn, der jetzt die Oberhand gewonnen hat.Der wird durch die obsessive Gedanken, komplusive Handlungen, durch die Gefühle der Verfolgung zu einer Mischung, die nur in einer Weise enden kann...WER IST TREVOR REZNIK? Warum kann er nicht schlafen?Christian Bale hat hier wahrlich Großes geleistet. Obwohl, der Darsteller hat bei seinem Gewichtsverlust von über 30 Kg sehr viel riskiert, natürlich die Gesundheit. Die Knochen, die wir sehe, das Gesicht eines Mannes, der ohne Mimik ist, weil einfach "die Muskel" fehlen, ist furchterregend. Er sieht wie ein Dämon, wie ein Alien...er spricht auch wie ein Robot.Man will diesen Körper, diesen Mann NICHT sehen, aber, irgendwie wirkt er magisch...man kann nicht wegsehen.Mitleid? Die Frage, ob man dieses Gefühl dabei hat? Ambivalent und...fast "nein".Warum? Die Antwort gibt es (ja, die ist ein Teil der "Lösung").Brad Anderson, der Regisseur, hat 2004 mit Ch. Bale einen perfekten Darsteller bekommen. Alle spielem gut, doch es ist ein Bale-Film.Warum Kafka, warum Dostojewski? Auch das gehört zu dem Film, man weiß es, nachher...Absolut sehenswert.Weil die Psychopathologie so große Rolle spielt, könnte man noch viel dazuschreiben. Aber, dann würde sich das Subjektive, die Ich-Empfindung verlieren. Es wäre schade!5 Sterne, es ist kein leichter Film.Nebenbei, die Szenen, die Stadt, die Fabrik, so präzise gezeigt, es könnte überall sein, die Trostlosigkeit, die graue Farbe des Alltags...und viele Leben ohne Freude, fast apokalyptisch!Natürlich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn werte Mitrezensenten, die den Film gesehen haben, mir hier die Meinungen über psychische Symptome mitteilen würden...Es ist nämlich ein Film, der so nah an K+D kommt, dass mich dies zusätzlich fasziniert!

Una de las películas que mejor sabor de boca me ha dejado últimamente. Thriller autentico, desgarrador de principio a fin. Con una actuación antológica de Christian Bale, que te hace ponerte totalmente en la piel del personaje y sufrir su propio calvario. Me encanta el aire tenebroso, oscuro, sucio y desolador que envuelve a toda la trama. Además me río de las críticas que había leído sobre que en los momentos finales la película se volvía previsible y perdía interés, porque sobre todo el desenlace final me ha parecido buenísimo, en parte también porque el desarrollo global de la película esta lleno de escenas interesantes, que enganchan totalmente y que hacen estar totalmente metido en la película de principio a fín. En fin, que ha sido un agradable descubrimiento que seguramente no te dejará indiferente.

Finalmente sono riuscita a trovare questo film su Amazon in lingua italiana! Visto tanti anni fa mi colpì per questa storia da incubo che vive Trevor Reznik. Operaio meccanico in una fabbrica, è da un anno che non dorme ed ogni volta che sembra riesca a cadere in un meritato sonno, qualcosa lo ridesta e lo fa rimanere nuovamente con gli occhi sbarrati. Magro da far paura, con gli occhi infossati, si aggira come un fantasma nei meandri della sua mente ridotta alla follia. In fabbrica provoca un incidente per cui un altro operaio perde il braccio, vede nemici dappertutto, si sente perseguitato e vittima di un complotto. Vede anche un personaggio inquietante che lo segue dappertutto e che alimenta ulteriormente la sua paranoia. Ma ben presto dovrà fare i conti con la realtà quando piano piano capirà che questa persona altri non è che la proiezione della sua coscienza e che lo porterà a capire cosa lo ha ridotto in questo stato. Straordinario questo camaleontico attore che è Christian Bale ridotto fisicamente al lumicino per interpretare Reznik. Il film è volutamente lento e dipinto con tinte forti e cupe per esaltare l'angoscia e l'incubo che vive il personaggio. Probabilmente non è un film per tutti. I gusti sono gusti. Ma sicuramente non si tratta di un film banale e scontato. A me è rimasto ben impresso nella memoria e sono quanto mai contenta di averlo potuto aggiungere nella mia cineteca. Ottima la qualità del DVD.
