Great visuals
I own a lot of books on the subject and a lot of them are mainly text with a few pictures of actual objects here and there, so when I decided to build a miniature scale of an ancient roman home I knew I needed more visuals and especially reconstruction images. This book is perfect for that. It has basic descriptions on what, where and how for people looking to understand the basics on ancient roman life and lots of great drawings to illustrate the different sections.I recommend this book for children and adults alike since it is well organized, easy to understand and the visuals will help anyone get interested in the subject or add to an already knowledgeable audience.

This book had illustrations of artifacts from Pompeii I had never seen in other books on the subject. I especially enjoyed the recreation of the homes in 3D and where they were located next to each other on the streets of the town. It was easy to visualize how it must've been before the eruption. This book is going to Pompeii with me next year and I will be using it as a guide.

we'd like to maybe one day
This book was for our son who loves Roman History, however, we have not have been able to set aside sufficient time to read it through as well as examine the photos and paintings. As a homeschooler, we'd like to maybe one day, travel to Rome, Herculaneum, Oplontis,Pompeii and Stabiae.

Take It With You When You Go
Came in handy when visiting Pompeii last year. Helped my husband visualize what the ruined town looked like before it was destroyed and buried.

Beautifully Illustrated
I loved this book. I am interested in ancient civilizations, how they built their cities and how they lived. This book is beautifully illustrated to a very high details. I feel like I have lived in Pompeii. I bought this book along with "City: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction". They were both more than what I have expected.

Pompeii (Roman World).
Excellent narrative with ample drawings of city life in this historic first century Roman city. After a recent visit and tour of Pompeii, I found this book filled in and amplified what we learned on our tour. Would recommend this book not only for the historical information but for the drawings of a typical Roman home, forum, marketplace, bath, amphitheater, restaurants, streets, and much more.

Bought it for a gift. Pictures bring it to life and the story and history are lengthy enough for the price.

Connolly never fails to deliver
Many of the late Peter Connolly's books sit on my bookshelves, including the superlativeĀ Greece and Rome at War . I didn't know that he'd written a text about Pompeii until I found myself researching for a short story about the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. The quality of Connolly's work is such that I bought this book without even thinking.I wasn't disappointed. Although the cover is oddly an image of a house in Herculaneum, rather than Pompeii, the book is a sheer delight from start to finish. The descriptions of the eruption, the town, its inhabitants and their houses and possessions are very good, but it's the diagrams and drawings that bring Pompeii to life.Thoroughly recommended. Five solid stars out of five.Ben Kane, author of Hannibal: Enemy of Rome and Fields of Blood, and the upcoming e-short story, Day of Fire: The Soldier's Story. Greece and Rome at War

Excellent
Nothing to dislike. Very clearly written and very well illustrated. Tells you a lot of interesting oddments you won't find in more expensive books. Whether you are new to it or have been interested in the Roman world for some time, this is a very useful book. Highly recommend it

Buy it
Well written with plenty of good quality illustrations - although sometimes some of the reference numbers explaining image details are a little tricky to see. Read this before you visit the latest Britiish Museum exhibition covering the subject - finishes 29sep 2013.Although there is obviously no substitute for an actual visit to the sites in Italy, preferably with a qualified guide, this book will provide a an excellent introduction.

Great
I bought this book to help me with my GCSE in classical civilisation for the Pompeii and Herculaneum topic and this contained all of the relevant information I needed and really helped for my exam, it shows a good insight into the classical world for example how they lived and their everyday lives also how their society worked e.g. with the forum and public baths, I would recommend this book.

Read this book before you visit Pompeii !!
This is a magnificent book to read before you visit . It is roughly A4 size and jammed full of photos and illustrations , and written in relatively simple English . It is just perfect for a non-complicated overview of life in Pompeii as it was . It helped to bring the ruins to life .
