Ivor Horton's Beginning Visual C++ 2013 (Wrox Beginning Guides)

Great for beginners, useful for pros who just need an update
I first read Horton's book on Visual C++ 6.0 years ago and it was my first introduction to the Visual Studio way. I'm pleased to say that this book takes the best parts of the older version but it addresses many of the complaints people had about it. It now includes what could be considered a complete C++ tutorial which could be useful for people who are completely new to C++. In addition, the whole book is updated to the newest version of C++.Highly recommended for beginners, I would recommend skipping the first few chapters if you are already familiar with C++11 and just want to dive straight into Visual Studio and the Microsoft library training.

Ivor Horton is an excellent writer and teacher
Ivor Horton is an excellent writer and teacher. His coverage of the C++ language is exceptional and I doubt that you will find a better tutorial anywhere. The book also explains how to leverage many of the features available with C++11 and the STL. He also gives a good overview of the Microsoft Foundation Class development platform and an introduction to creating Windows store apps. The reasons I took off one star are:1) The Kindle version of the book does not have an index. This is unforgivable in a technical book and seems to be a common theme with Wrox books in general.2) The sample drawing app uses the old GDI platform instead of the newer (relatively speaking) and easier to use (with some setup) GDI+ version.Aside from the above nits, the book is highly recommended.

Great book, still working on finishing it
Great book, still working on finishing it. Is it a one stop place for learning CPP? No, but it's an essential book for learning the basic concepts of CPP and OOP. The tutorials are great and the author does a good job of getting you started and on your way to really picking up the subject. I expect I'll have to continue with a few other books and continue to research from various websites but there's a vast universe of information on the CPP this a great place to start!

In depth introduction to C++ i painstaking detail
I also have the same book for VS 2010. In it, he goes far afield to introduce some GUI programming at the beginning. In this book, he starts with Console programming, and waits a long time to introduce forms. But, you need to know how to write code before you can effectively use forms, and especially events.

... reading the book from cover to cover and was disappointed with the windows programming portion of the book
I just finished reading the book from cover to cover and was disappointed with the windows programming portion of the book. Horton's coverage of C++ 11 /14 was very good but the visual part is very poor. I have a hard time believing that Horton wrote this himself though. I am very familiar with his prose and this is a very poor job and totally unlike him. I did not give this rating two stars out of the hope that he was just having a rough time during the writing of this book.

Mr. Horton is an excellent teacher. He knows how to explain concepts in a simple, step by step fashion. I understand C++ as I never did before.

Highly Recommended
This book is not a reference manual, it is a tutorial. You can learn the C++ programming language from scratch with this book. Although I am not a beginner myself, I found the book excellent to fill in the gaps in my understanding. The meticulous style gives the best description of the language that I have seen. I think it would be suitable for beginners since it assumes nothing and describes everything.Up to chapter 10, you could just read the book without having a computer at all. From chapter 11 on, you really need a copy of the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE because the book refers in detail to examples built on that IDE. Of course Visual Studio allows you to Edit, Compile, Link and Execute your programs. In fact the book is also an excellent description of how to get started using Visual Studio.I bought the Kindle version and I use the Android Kindle app on a tablet to view it. Works great.

Unhappy...
... because nothing in the book description says that you cannot develop the exemples with the Visual Studio 2013 Express edition ! You need to have the full fledged Professional edition of Visual Studio.
