Evocation of a time sadly past
To read how "at anytime, you half-expected to walk into an elephant or a rhino" in a country which "appeared to be stiff with rhino" is to be drawn into a first-hand account of an idyl which has been so recently lost to poachers. He speaks so passionately about the beauty and dignity of the indigenous tribes in an ear before they have been exposed to European forces. The treks which he recounts in such matter-of-fact terms would make many modern "explorers" run for the comforts of home.We are all fotunate that Thesiger had the ability to write so eloquently about his many travels and his life. I would urge everyone to read this or any of his other books. Perhaps then, those who moan about not having particular material goods will appreciate just how lucky they are to have any.

The latter explorations of a different continent by one of the greatest explorers ever.
Not as amazing as his early work about his life amongst tha Arabs, but the spirit of adventure and lifestyle of his later years remains the same, as does the expeditions into difficult regions, unafraid and eager. I do not collect Thesiger, but if you do, this will make your collection complete. Written with the same thoughtful thoroughness as previous works, and with an excellent picture record to supplement the text.

Interestingly other books I haver read on Africa, some of the characters are mentioned here i.e George and Joy Adamson, David Sheldrick.
