Faber Music Ltd In Rainbows
H**T
Disappointing - only half the transcriptions are accurate
For the amount of effort that's clearly gone into this book it's a shame that the basic accuracy of the guitar transcriptions seriously lets it down on many songs. The tablature for big chunks of several songs is way off, just nowhere near what's actually played. If you're paying for a book like this, you really expect to get something that's accurate except for fairly minor details. I'd say you get that for only about half of the songs in the book.So what does this book give you? It has full guitar tab transcriptions for all 10 of the main songs from "In Rainbows" as well as 6 tracks from the second bonus CD that was part of the discbox release. Vocal lines are transcribed and some synth/keyboard and bass parts are also written out for guitar, where these are an important part of the song (sometimes with bizarre mistakes in the instrument names, e.g. vocal part in weird fishes written as "theramin"). So for songs like Videotape and All I Need that have almost no guitar, you get a guitar tab arrangement of the keyboard and bass parts. These arrangements generally look OK, but it's the guitar tracks that most people will be interested in so I'll focus on these. On the plus side, for songs with multiple guitar parts all of these are written out in tab. On the down side: the accuracy. Comments on the key guitar tracks below:15 steps: pretty poor accuracy overall, verse riff is fine but the chorus part is a long way off and uses pretty mad (unplayable) fingerings. Using pull-offs to the open B string is the key to the chorus part!Bodysnatchers: accuracy is OK but should be better. The transcription has the correct drop D tuning for low E string, but the top E should also be dropped to D. The main riff has the right notes but the wrong fingering in some places. Some suggested chord shapes are awkward to play (F = 333211?) and some chord shapes are just wrong (e.g. in the "lights gone out" and "no, no, no" sections).Nude: poor accuracy. The guitar part should be played using an alternative tuning (D string up to E) but the transcription misses this. Without the right tuning the add9 details in the verse are awkward to play, and the transcribed chorus guitar parts ends up completely wrong.Weird fishes: good accuracy, the right notes and right fingerings for all the guitar parts, just a few details of the picking patterns/rhythms are slightly out in a few places.Faust Arp: good accuracy throughout, the fingering for the C/Bb chord looks wrong, but the rest is pretty much spot on.House of Cards: the accuracy's not great here. The main riff has the right notes but wrong fingering, the "denial, denial" section has the wrong chord shapes completely.Reckoner: looks fine: good accuracy throughout.Jigsaw falling into place: not bad, has the right tuning, but quite a few chord shapes aren't right. So, if you're prepared to listen carefully and use the transcriptions from the book as a starting point, it's a useful purchase. But if you expect to get accurate transcriptions for all of the songs (which is surely what you expect?) you'll be disappointed as you only get that for around half of the songs.
