Not quite prime time.
3/13/21: First thoughts.1. Set up is straight forward. I did not set up an Onyx account (the China thing) and can still do everything. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version.2. Google Play Store took about a half hour to get working but now works ok, as do Android apps.3. The screen is dark. I have a Boox Note 2, which has a very nice screen easily usable with the front light off with a decent reading light. Not so with the Nova 3 Color. When outdoors either in shade or sun the screen works well with no front light on. But indoors some front light is necessary. That reduces the easy-on-the-eyes benefit of an E-ink screen.4. The front light is a bluish cold light. The Note 2 has both warm and cold lights and can be individually adjusted. The Nova 3 Color has only the cold light, which I find unpleasant.5. Yes, it has colors, though they are muted and washed out. Nothing looks vibrant. Pictures and videos often look cartoonish with 4096 colors at 100 dpi.6. Ghosting with color images can be very significant even with the standard refresh mode. I adjusted the standard refresh mode down to 2, which helps but it can still be disappointing. Ghosting on the Note 2 is well controlled.7. Battery life is somewhat poor. Three or four hours of use saw the battery drop from 100% down to 80%. This might be exacerbated by the need to run the front light and operation of the color filter layer. The battery in the Note 2, even with the larger display, lasts far longer.8. Note writing works well, but you'll probably want to use black instead of the colors which don't have good contrast. Color contrast can be adjusted but colors never really stand out that well. Yellow and red are especially off.Things I like:1. It's smaller than the Note 2 and therefore more portable, but the standard Nova 3 is identical except for the lack of color, so that could be a better option unless yor really NEED color, not just want color.2. Having dabs of color can spice images up. Some games are easier to use and visuals that require color instead of grayscale work better. This is probably the best it is going to get for a color E-reader & note taker in this size. By late fall the Kaleido 3 screens should be out but it's likely that will simply allow larger screens rather than an overall better experience. My recommendation is that if you don't really NEED color then skip this for the B&W Boox devices.Meaningful improvements needed:1. Either change the front light to a warm light or add both adjustable warm and cold lights like in the Note 2.2. Fix the ghosting. It is too much in many situations.3. Figure out a way to extend the battery life. What I really want:I would like a very portable 6" E-ink Android tablet/e-reader with access to the Google Play store and Android apps. I want wifi, bluetooth and a built-in speaker and microphone. I really don't need a note-taking device, so get rid of the wacom layer, which should make the screen brighter without a front light on. For the front light provide both cold and warm lights, or just a warm light if only one light is possible. Make both color and non-color versions so I can choose the one that works best.3/19/21 Update:1. Some of the Android apps are a bit strange in that the shortcuts might occasionally not work. I've had to go into the Google Play store, find the app and click on ENABLE, then OPEN. I might have to do this periodically. Google News can usually not be started from the icon shortcut. Instead, the News shortcut starts the play store, and I have to click OPEN from within the play store. All Android apps will run but sometimes I must mess around with them like that.2. With a good reading light overhead, only minimal front lighting is needed, so the front light can be hardly noticeable. Without an overhead light, the front light intensity must be turned up and the appearance of the cold light becomes prominent.3. The screen is markedly gray initially, but after 5 or 10 minutes of use, the gray background color seems perfectly fine, and the grayness becomes much less noticeable. The gray background doesn't change, but my perception of it does. Text contrast is very good and text resolution looks very good, even with a magnifying glass.4. Color pictures can look fairly good but requires adjusting of color contrast and intensity to minimum levels in the adjustment screen.5. Having color, even if only in small amounts, really does perk up the display, and I find using the Nova 3 Color can be just a more enjoyable experience than using my B&W Note 2. After using the Nova 3 Color, the Note 2 can look rather drab in comparison.4. I would really like to see a Note Color device (10.3" screen) but with a brighter background (no front light required) and both adjustable warm and cold front lights.

Great, but niche.
This is my third Boox device (I also have the Note2 and the B&W Nova3), and I love these things. Boox devices are not tablets, despite what Onyx International says, but they are the most advanced, most flexible e-reader/note-taking devices you can buy. I’ll stress the point again: THESE ARE NOT TABLETS. They run Android 10, meaning you can theoretically run any app in the Google Play store, but just because you can do something, it doesn’t mean that you should. If it has videos or a lot of animations, use a regular tablet instead. Boox devices excel at reading and drawing/note-taking, so that is what you should use them for. Audiobooks and streaming audio work fine, but you’ll need a Bluetooth headset or a USB-C adapter. Web browsing is also not too bad, especially after recent updates introduced smooth scrolling and full refreshes when you stop. Don’t get me wrong, there have been huge advances in e-ink technology since the first Kindle came out, but there is still a long way to go before e-ink devices can credibly replace regular tablets, so keep your expectations realistic, or you will be disappointed. I like this color version of the Nova3 (the B&W one also being a very impressive device), but be aware that you will be making some tradeoffs as you move from B&W to color. For one thing, ghosting is a much bigger problem in color, so you will be doing full refreshes more frequently, which is thankfully made easier by the gesture controls introduced in a recent update. The resolution of the color grid is lower than for B&W images/text, so I’ve found that most comic books are not really a good fit for this device, since you can’t fully appreciate the art. Another tradeoff is that I have always preferred using e-readers with external illumination, like a physical book, but this is harder to do with the Nova3 Color because the color grid makes the background darker, reducing contrast. I’ve found that it takes sitting under a very bright lamp to be able to read comfortably when the screen light is turned off. Thankfully, Onyx has replaced the blue and yellow LEDs of older devices with white LEDs, so keeping the light on doesn’t bother me as much. It’s a hassle to balance the blue and yellow lights to make the screen look paper-white, so I’m thankful not to have to do it anymore. I believe the color screen is worth it, despite the drawbacks, because I read the news a lot, and I like having full-color pictures and charts in a screen that is easier on the eyes, but your mileage may vary. If you plan to read primarily books, you might consider one of the B&W devices. Either way you’ll be getting a solid device. And with Onyx’s frequent updates, you’ll be getting a device that will probably be better a year from now than when you first receive it.

Groundbreaking but has its limitations, overpriced
I bought this colour e-ink reader for reading comics but the display has its limitation as it can only show 4096 colours. In addition, the colour filter array is annoyingly distracting and makes the screen darker and impossible to read without the front line on. Plus the lower resolution of 100 ppi is not good enough for graphic/colour content. For black and white content the resolution is 300 ppi.I would have bought pocketbook colour 7.8 inches but instead bought boox nova 3 colour since it supports android apps and most of my reading material is from kindle store.I won't mind the slow refresh rate at all as I have been using e-readers for last 7 years and used to it, but I would love to see colour e-reader with better resolution, at leat 212 ppi for colour content, and increased number of colours displaying capability. Only then they can justify the price. The cheap stylus/pen which comes with this e-reader is another disappointment which lacks precision. I would say boox note air stylus/pen is much better than this.I hope they come up with an improved version of these color e-ink products.

It's fake, I got metal things instead device
All device box was very good but not opened correctly because of filled by glue. Inside the box, I found metal bolts without the device. It's shame!すべてのデバイスボックスは非常に良かったが、接着剤で満たされたために正しく開かれなかった。 箱の中には、装置のない金属製のボルトがありました。 それは残念です!
