Beautiful pictures. enjoyed by my preschooler!
We borrowed this book from the library and my son has been asking me for this book for a while now. Grabbed him a copy to keep! He will be 4 years old in 3 more months. It depends on the child. He is not the type to get scared of stories (such as the 3 little pig where the 1st 2 get eaten up) But I know some children ARE sensitive to that, so this one in the scheme of things isn't as "scary" as Paul Galdone's other books. Like I said, my son isn't afraid or scared of them, so you have to know your child's temperament. We love Paul Galdone's books amd we own several now!

Old Favorite But Bonus Story on CD is Best Part
Rumpelstiltkin was one of my favorite stories from childhood. I'm not sure why, but most likely because all works out in the end for the Queen. Galdone's version mostly stays faithful to the original German fairy tale. The illustrations are drawn in thin black ink and colored with watercolors. I became interested in the original tale once again after reading Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin . Compared with many illustrated books today, it seems to lack vibrancy. For me, though, the drawings give it an old fashion feel that enhances the sensation of longevity of this long passed down tale. The read-a-long CD is mediocre. The music, at times, especially in the beginning, overpowers the story rather than giving it a mood and bringing the story to life. As a librarian, I sometimes use books with CDs to give my voice a rest. Unfortunately, I'm probably going to have to skip using the CD because of the slow pace of the narrator. I found myself skipping ahead in the book and then waiting for the CD to catch up.The CD has two versions of the story; one with page turn signals and one without. The page turn signals tend to slow things down just a bit. However, the good news is that the CD comes with a bonus story: Tailypo. I already have this story on tape along with the book. I LOVE that story and so do my students. It's not for children under 6 in my opinion as it can be frightening. However, my middle grade students love this suspenseful and creepy story. Not a peep out of the group when I present the book and story on tape/CD to them. I would recommend buying the book too. Including Tailypo on the CD bumped my rating to four stars.

Caution!
Ok, the rumpelstiltskin story is as expected. But what's up with the bonus story? Super creepy! "Taily-po". Not for young ears!!

Classic Fairy Tales with Nice illustrations in Hardback
If you have not found this series of hard back fairy tales, you are missing out. They appear to be for the most part the original version of the stories along with some great illustrations in nice hard back binding.

illustration is wonderful
My daughter loved this story, and most importantly the illustration. She had this at school, and was just mesmerized by the pictures. A wonderful version of this book.
