Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the wealthiest city in the world. The Republic was founded on principals of shared power, never allowing one man to seize absolute control. But now, those foundations are crumbling...and two soldiers unwittingly become entwined in the historical events of ancient Rome. A drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, husbands and wives, Rome chronicles a turbulent era that saw the death of a republic and the birth of an empire. Review: Worth your time and money. - Cesar's troubles begins this series and goes through Cleopatra's suicide. Part one to the end of Part two. Where does the money come from to run the Republic? Review: A truly epic series! - What a fabulous mini-series! This is a stellar production (at the time it was made, it was the most expensive series ever done--HBO had to split the expense of the production with the BBC because neither could afford to produce this series on their own!). This series is a truly epic production. It is first rate in every regard. If you are a fan of "I Claudius", keep in mind that the creator of the series sites it as their all-time favorite television production. This could be considered, in essence, the prequel. "Rome" covers the historical period when Julius Caesar became emperor and ends shortly before the events which were portrayed in "I Claudius" first begin. While "Claudius" centers upon the royal family and the highest levels of Roman society, "Rome" centers upon the "regular people" as much as it does upon Julius Caesar, Augustus (originally Octavius), Marcus Antonius (Mark Anthony), Cleopatra and the other more well-known historical figures of the period. We get a very fully realized version of what life in "Rome" was really like at the time; from those living in the palaces of the rich to the average man and woman on the street. At it's core is the tale of a celebrated Roman soldier returning home to his wife and family, attempting to return to his old life and discovering that you can't ever really go home again. The world (and Rome itself) have changed and he must find a way to change along with all of it. We see life on the streets, the gangs, the criminal underworld, the underside of political rule as well as aspects of the up-side of the most powerful city in the world at that time. The cast is superb, the writing is exemplary, the direction is well above average and the production values are literally off the scale! If you are a fan of historical drama, you won't find this one lacking in anything you are looking for. I've run my bluray set three times since I purchased it and, believe me, those won't be my last viewings either! This is a series that never fails to entertain.

Awesome!
As a Big Fan of the Series " I, Claudius", The Series "Rome" Season 1 & 2 was Fantastic. I streamed the complete series through Prime Instant Video to my HDTV and enjoyed it so much, I decided to stream it a second time. 'I was totally entertained!! I then decided to purchase the 2 seasons, because I had to add it to my collection of movies, it fits in great with the "I, Claudius Series" that I own. Drama! Drama! and more Drama is what you get in addition to Fantastic Acting, Fantastic Musical Score, and a glance at some of ...Ancient Roman History & its people in a way that history books would never, ever display. I Love it! You will too!

The discs play fine. I didn't like Lucius Vorenus's wife in this ...
The first season discs come in a folding cardboard and plastic contraption that goes inside a folding wood box. The second season comes in a folding cardboard and plastic contraption without the wood box. The discs play fine. I didn't like Lucius Vorenus's wife in this series. The second season is more depraved than the first. There is homosexuality and a few perverts too. Lucius becomes a family man, but his daughters hate him. He should've traded his family for a few good slaves. If you liked Spartacus: Gods of the Arena or Spartacus: Blood and Sand you should like Rome. If you’re looking for good stuff to watch consider miniseries like The Astronauts Wives Club (2015), Band of Brothers (2001), Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), Into the West (2005), Lonesome Dove (1989), Manhattan (2014-2015), Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Taken (2002), and The 10th Kingdom (2000), which are all terrific because they have clear beginnings that establish an objective, then strong middles and conclusive endings where the goal is achieved, like a good novel. Other shows I’ve really enjoyed include Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Breaking Bad (2008-2013), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), Granite Flats (2013-2015), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Lost (2004-2010), Merlin (2008-2012), The Prisoner (1967-1968), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek (1966-1969) and Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001). I didn’t list any contemporary series I’m following that don’t have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish. If you like reading try some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.

I love this series
I love this series. It presents a steamy festering Rome instead of the stilted classic Rome of the old movies. I kept thinking how "mafia" it seemed. It is pretty historically accurate too which was a nice surprise. The acting was really good but I was surprised at the casting of Kevin McKidd. He's a really good actor and did a terrific job, but Italian he's definitely not. Granted there was a strong Celtic influx into Rome but still I think it was maybe not the best choice just on visual terms. I still give it 5 stars because it definitely exceeded expectations.

Senatus Populusque Romanus
Comment vivait-on à Rome ?

Amazing characterization, sets, music, costumes and story!
Rome is my favourite place in the world, and this series brings the history of the period of Julius Caesar and Octavian gloriously to life! The attention to detail, the music, the amazing characterization, the exciting cliff-hanger endings to almost every episode! I even love the amazing opening credits! This series makes history so compelling and so easy to follow (I realize that liberties were taken). My special favourite among the cast is Polly Walker as Atia, head of a charmingly dysfunctional family. She is perfect as an aristocratic lady who is both shameless and ruthless (and has some great comic moments). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
