LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS FILTER!!!
I got into the aquarium scene about four years ago with a couple small 10 gallon tanks and then about 2 1/2 years ago I upgraded to a 75 gallon tank. I got a deal on a floor model tank from PetSmart that came with everything I needed including the filter. That filter was a Marineland Emperor 400. I had that filter for about one year and was never really happy with it. It did not oxygenate the water well and was very noisy even after I rigged some styrofoam up to keep it from vibrating against the glass. I cleaned the impeller and other parts religiously and made sure there was no buildup around any moving parts and despite all my efforts this filter broke in less than a year. After doing some research and talking with some friends I decided to purchase the Aqua Clear 110. Since I ordered it on Amazon I was without a filter for about a week and my water was kind of dirty when I finally got it. It had my water crystal clear within 8 hours and was a heck of a lot quieter than my Marineland filter. The noise factor was a concern after reading some of the other reviews because my tank is in our living room but it turned out to be much quieter than the Marineland. The other great feature to this filter is that each piece of the filter can be removed and replaced individually. With some of the other filters I looked at this was not the case which meant that when one thing broke the entire filter system had to be replaced. With this filter system everything is removable and replaceable individually so you don't have to spend close to $100.00 just for one bad piece. This was a big selling feature for me when buying this filter system. Also, another neat feature about this filter is the adjustable water pressure. With this system you can adjust the amount of water returned to your tank. Since this is for larger tanks it moves a lot of water no matter what but since I have the smallest tank for this system's capabilities I was able to decrease the amount of water flow so my fish weren't fighting the filter's deluge of water if left on full flow. This also was a nice selling feature since I do have some smaller fish in my tank. Finally, the three filtration products are easily installed and replaced and all do their jobs very very well and you can find them at most major pet stores or fish supply stores. In short I would recommend this filter system to anyone with a 75 - 110 gallon tank.

Great filter for 55 gallon tank
Used to replace another aging popular brand filter for a 55 gallon planted tank with sand substrate. This one came in slightly cheaper and had great reviews. I was not satisfied with certain features failing on the competitor so I wanted to shop around. Pros: -Easy to clean filter. Has a large block sponge that is fairly easy to remove and rinse in a bucket. -Inlet tubes detach and reattach fairly easy for cleaning without removing the whole unit. -Noise level is better than previous filter but not whisper quiet, may depend if material gets stuck in the impeller. -Has done a fantastic job keeping the water clear after maintenance of the sponge filter. I only use the sponge provided and bio balls (small bag included + my own previous transfer). I may add finer floss in the future. The filter materials box is a good size for this unit. Cons: None so far. A few issues I ran into: -I had an issue with the impeller not running after a week of use but it may have been due to material clogged in the impeller shaft. I thought it was defective at first but after cleaning and running for a day it returned to normal function and noise levels. -Due to having a planted tank I find I get a lot of plant materials stuck in the intake tubes. Other reviewers mention putting mesh bags of some kind around the intake for easier cleaning. I think this just shows the filter is doing a fantastic job picking up floating junk. If you are shopping for a hang on back filter I would recommend this one.

Silence is a virtue.
Oh my fishies its SILENT. I had a 40-60 gallon aquatech on a 75 gallon tank...and another one on a 47 gallon tank. The 47 gallon tank one is still running strong 3 yrs on, the one on the 75 died a year and a half in. The magnet spun out and thus wouldn't pump water. So I looked around wanting something maybe better then aquatech and not a tetra whisper(screamer more like it, have one on a 10 gallon) the aquatech's no matter waterlevel always sound like a waterfall. a very obvious waterfall. So I decided rather then under filtering the tank I'd over filter it a bit, and in comes this majestic item. First, near impossible to get outta box with out a good fight. Then the media part doesn't wanna sit in quite right so that was a fuss for a bit. Then I kind of wished this had a slightly longer intake then the 2 stuck together, its a good 4 inches shorter then the aquatech one, so its not really a good deep filter...but boy plugging it it and priming the pump...and really good water flow. And SILENCE. Its AMAZING. I can't hear it at all, and i'm standing next to it, but I can hear the aquatech and the tetra whisper from 40 feet down the hall behind a closed door. It finally doesn't sound like a huge waterfall in my dining room! Now, it does have massive water flow, and it's pretty forceful coming outta the spill way, makes more bubbles then my air stones, which is good for the gas exchanges. An advantage over aquatech and tetra whisper is, no filter cartridges to rinse/semi clean every few months till it can't be done and a restart with a new filter catrdridge, this is foam, a bag of charcoal(yay no more fish smell either!) and ceramic stones for the bio media part. Save money on the foam when it breaks down and use polyfill batting from walmart or a bag of the stuff, I used to use that with a way old filter back in the early 90's, worked better then the foam, and a whole lot cheaper. But its silent, I'm still marveling over that, nearly all power fish equipment from air pumps to filters are NOISY. This is not.

Going on nine years now
I have had this filter since 2015 so nine years now. It has run nonstop except for tearing it down every 2 to 3 months. I gave it four stars but wish they had 4.5 ratings. I only cut it down because of the noise level...mind you it's quiet but I'm also running two eheim canisters filters as I have a 125 gallon tank. The canisters are silent and also have been running nine years. That said they also cost 3x as much as a hob filter. You can't go wrong with this filter...easy to maintain and filters well.

Great filters keep the water clean
The AquaClear filters are incredible. I have two tanks for two turtles, with one tank a full 45 gallons. This filter works great to keep that water clear and suck up all the debris. I'm so glad I upgraded. The one thing I would note, is to buy a bigger filter than the ranges recommend. We have a 45 gallon tank about half full and we needed this filter to keep the water clean. Bur overall, it's awesome!

The best large HOB filter on the market.
In almost sixty years of using outside aquarium filters, this is the best filter I have ever owned. It doesn't use cartridges, but comes with a sponge, biomedia, and charcoal pads. Since no cartridges are used in this filter, you can use any filter media you want, from fine sponges, filter floss, to mesh bags packed with any filter aid you need for your situation. One key is that you can change only part of the filter media, thereby keeping the established bacteria colony going. I like this filter so well that I bought two. TIP: use a pre-filter sponge to make it an even better HOB filter.

Unacceptable Manufacturer's Defect
SO disappointed. My new AquaClear 110 power filter arrived yesterday, and I was very excited to get it going on my 55 gallon! I followed the directions to the T, but the pump wouldn't prime correctly. A large air bubble was trapped in the intake at the top of the U tube, and I couldn't get rid of it. I spent hours messing around with this filter to try to troubleshoot. I thought I didn't have a good seal between the impeller and the intake, because the directions said there would be a click when the intake was properly installed, but there was never any click. I'm embarrassed how long it took me to figure out what was going wrong. I've had aquariums for years and am good at fixing old and well-used pumps. I finally took the U tube out, turned it upside down at my kitchen sink, and filled it up with water. Yep, the U tube leaks, so the pump sucks in air. Upon closer inspection, you can see the entire seam at the top of the U tube looks melted. When it was made it wasn't melted together correctly, and it's completely unworkable. I tried to seal the leaky seam using aquarium silicone, but it still leaks, and the leak makes it unbearably loud. I don't want to replace the entire filter, as I've currently got it running on my stocked tank and I need the filtration now (even though it's not working well due to the air leak.) I just want a replacement U tube. Amazon, can you give me information about how to obtain a working replacement part? I'm so disappointed that this pump was so fatally defective, brand new out of the box. Certainly not what I expected from this company's reputation.

Great upgrade!!
This filter has been great. We had a different kind before that started leaking in the back of the tank so we bought this one without a whole lot of time to research. This one has been very quiet and I feel has just done a better overall job. This thing functions like a champ and just fits on my tank overall better. Very happy with how much water this thing pushes through and how efficient it is
