Van Damme flexes his muscles to find out about his unknown brother ...
Ringo Lam doesn't put a foot wrong in this action flick which keeps up a real adrenaline rush in its superbly choreographed, hi-energy action sequences. The story concerns Van Damme's twin brother, killed in Nice in the first scene, whom he never knew he had. The brother, Mikhail, had been at loggerheads with the Russian mafia when he tried to leave it. The surviving brother, Alain, takes on his identity. At the same time, he is now the one being targeted by some corrupt FBI officers who risk being exposed as working for the mafia should a list of names kept in a Nice safety deposit box fall into the hands of the US government ... All this is secondary, though, to the action, and Jean-Claude van Damme is brilliant in these scenes, and like a true hero, emerges virtually unscathed. Whether in the streets of Nice, a sauna in New York, or spilling out onto the subway of the same, he seems strained to breaking point, but comes through. The camera work matches him - these sequences are superbly edited, often using realistic settings: the markets and narrow streets are used to ratchet up the knife-edge tension even more, usually with many innocent bystanders coming to within an inch of their lives, and fruit and vegetable stalls sent flying. It is exciting like a comic book brought to life. The effects don't stop there, though, as the cast is excellent, including French stars Jean-Hugues Anglade and Stephane Audran, Natasha Henstridge adding glamour and love interest, and Van Damme himself really convincing in the part as a man of great reserves of strength - and decency. The visual panache extends to the New York streets, the lighting at night, the interior of a nightclub with red and yellow balloons, an amiable guy in a rough neighbourhood who has both a waxed floral tablecloth and a dartboard. There's also a slightly loony NY cab driver who gets a surprising pathos. Van Damme shows his muscles in a sauna fight wearing the skimpiest of towels, that never even falls off ... and then slips into a pair of white long johns and matching top under a soft black knee-length leather coat - all in the blink of an eye, and in spite of having a hail of bullets directed at him through a metal door at the time - worn open to show off his own buff shape, and runs down the centre of the street like the Marathon Man, with the Russian mafia in hot pursuit, and of course eludes them. Now that's style.

One of Van Damme's Best
Ringo Lam's 'City Heat' was a well crafted action/crime drama that would later influence Tarantino into creating 'Reservoir Dogs'. So its no surprise that Ringo Lam's Amerian Debut is a solid little actioner and probably one of Van Damme's best films. After Hard Target, Timecop and Sudden Death Van Damme seem to be on a roll and this film is no exception. The twin brother theme is used to good effect again and is a little less over the top than 'Double Impact'. Natasha Hendstrige looks stunning as usual and is a likeable leading lady. Maybe not as explicit as Species, you do still get a glimpse of her 'assets' (in glorious high defintion). The film is well-acted and fast-paced and it definately delivers on well-choreographed action sequences. In terms of blu ray quality, the disc is about the same standard as Sudden Death and Timecop. The picture is probably as good as you are gonna get from a mid-nineties action flick and is a worthy upgrade from the DVD. The sound delivers as dialogue is crisp and clear and you get plently of low-end thump to accomodate all the action: bullets spray, bones snap and Jean Claude kicks...

A very good and enjoyable action movie by Van Damme
Maximum Risk is a really good action movie. Better than I hoped it would be. I really enjoyed it. Van Damme's twin identical brother has been killed and he is wants to find out who has done it. He has coming more than he hoped for with the Russian Mobsters and the renegade FBI agents after him. He goes from one city to onother and meets his twin's brother beautiful girlfriend played by Natasha Henstridge. He has a task in hand trying to expose an international conspiracy with all the traces that had anything to do with his brother are disappearing fast. I enjoyed the action in this movie and Van Damme's acting is really good to some people surprise who are sceptical about his acting skills. He proved them wrong with this movie. Get the dvd as you will enjoy it. Lots of baddies to keep you going. Great Seller. Fast Delivery.Thank You.
