a great intro to the myths
I have truly enjoyed reading this book. I have some children's books on mythology that I read to my kids, and I found the topic so interesting I wanted a little something for myself. This is a great light reading of mythology for adults (or teens). I have always had a fascination with greek mythology - but when I took a college course in greek mythology - I felt that the professor pretty much killed any interest I had in the topic. Basically he threw us into some difficult text without much background info - and I ended up bored and "un-enlightened". Thankfully I rekindled this interest by reading to my kids. This particular book is just wonderful, especially if you are new to mythology - because the writing is very straight forward and accessible, yet fun and intriguing. Had I just started with this book in college, I probably would have read many more books, and ultimately waded into the more complex writing of the Greek plays. This is just the book to stoke the flames for anybody looking for a first adult book about the greek myths.

Not Greek To Me!
I love it when I can write a good review about a book. This is one of the best I have ever read and listened to at the same time! I bought both the book and the CD and it was brought to life in a great way. I'm a very visual person and listening and reading the book at the same time spoke to the core child in me. I love story telling and this is story telling at it's best. The comparisons between Greek mythology and other mythologies and world religions and how things came to be are remark similar. If you love Greek Mythology as I do this is great book to cut your teeth on so hold onto your seat and take a wonderful ride.

Purchase the Audio CD
I have read many books of Greek mythology and history to my children and "Heroes, Gods and Monsters" has to be one of the best. There is a reason why a book first published in 1966 is continually republished. Bernard Evslin has the narrative gift. I would recommend purchasing the audio cd. Like the author, the actor reading the book is also gifted. The Greek myths began as spoken word presentations. I believe the best way to present these myths to young children is through the audio cd. The marriage of great text and gifted actor is magical. Highly recommended.

This book is fascinating and informative in ways you never imagined
It's an interesting book, written by Professor Bernard Evslin. I read it twice. Why you might ask, because a lot of words that are in use today, come from Greek Mythology. For example the word Olympics is derived from the word Olympus, where the mythical Greek God Zeus lived, and the word panic was derived from the word Pan who played his flute. This book is both fascinating and informative as it gives you an incite into were our words were derived. Bernard Evslin also gives you a list of books that expands on the subject.

Superb
I have ordered and purchased many mythology books. My 9 year old is interested in mythology and has read numerous books. After purchasing this book, I can say it not only holds adults, but it captures children as well. My 7 year old highly active and bouncing off the walls can't wait till I read him another story from this book. He sits through them all. He longs to hear more. I don't believe the author meant for his book to be read by children, it holds them captive as well. Out of all the books I have on mythology, this is one I recommend. It doesn't becoming boring, there is no skipping through pages, skimming through chapters, etc. It tells the stories well and holds you there.

Good, easy to read introduction to Greek mythology
An easy to read account of the main characters and events of Greek mythology. Some details vary from other accounts but I find that's part of the magic of reading different interpretations of all myths and legends.
