A good introduction to a somewhat esoteric subject
I was doing some research for an article about Egyptian motifs in Freemason and Rosicrucian contexts, and found it very difficult to find anything very useful about how secret organizations of that sort developed and evolved. I purchased this book to find out some of the basics about secret societies. The best thing about this book is that it is so well written. The language is clear and pragmatic. It is written as a history book, and at no point gets sucked into the arcane world about which the author is writing. The style is documentary, not partisan, and is very easy to read, and that's exactly what I was looking for.It starts off in Part 1 with a definition of secret societies and looks at how they developed. It goes on to look at a number of different societies under different categories: Part 2, Religious, Mystical and Occult Societies and Part 3, Political and Criminal Societies. Part 2 was of particular use to me, covering Templars and Neo-Templars, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, Occult Secret Socieites, Opus Dei and The Priory of Sion and the Mystery of Rennes. The chapters in Part 3 deal with The Assassins, Illuminism, Elites of the New World Order, Italian Masonry's Propaganda Due, the Dark Brotherhoods and the Mafia and The Triads and The Tong. I hadn't really thought of the Mafia, Triads and Tong being secret societies, but it was an interesting twist on the subject. This book is a very well written introduction to secret societies for those with no prior knowledge on the subject. It is possible to sit and read it all the way through, and is a very enjoyable read, but it can also used as a reference book, to look up particular societies and ideas. It is well produced, with plenty of colour illustrations on good quality paper. Although quite a fat paperback (400 pages) it seems to be well built and is holding together well.
