Jimmy Buffett's Picaresque Novel
This novel is a sequel to a short story from Tales From Margaritaville. In that story, Tully Mars throws a table through the window of his employer and sets out with his horse...in search of America, as it were. We left him on a beach in Mexico, "...wasting away in Margaritaville." In this novel, we pick up with Tully and his horse, Mr. Twain, as they go off in search of the Caribbean. Some people view the Jimmy Buffett phenomena as a simple search for escapism, but it's more than that - it's a search for wisdom and meaning. If anyone has life figured out, it's Jimmy Buffett. So, in this novel, we see what wisdom is to be had in dropping everything and heading out to sea. This is a picaresque novel. Our hero has his various adventures and meets a colorful cast of characters along the way. With every new character, the action stops so we can get their full backstory. This may annoy some readers who are looking for a fast-paced plot, but that's not the point of this book. These characters and events are probably taken from Buffett's own wanderings on the sea. The point is to see life through the eyes of those who dropped out of mainstream society to head for the horizon...and to learn from them. There is plenty here to entertain parrot-heads as well. Buffett enjoys peppering his prose with song lyrics from his own oeuvre, as well as the artists he admires. For example, when he describes a party as "shaking like a live wire," we get the reference to Mexico by James Taylor. If you are a die-hard Parrot-Head, you will like this book. If you fantasize about dropping out and heading for the tropics, you will like this book. I think his ambition was to write a Caribbean novel to put on your shelf next to Don't Stop The Carnival. In that respect, he succeeded.

Great light reading
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Light story with a happy ending is not always a bad thing! Looking forward to reading another book by Jimmy soon.

Lovely
Typical Jimmy Buffett work. Wild and crazy but still tugs at your heartstrings. This one is excellently done grammar- and spelling-wise so was a pleasure to read.

Not an Autobiography
First this is not an autobiography of Jimmy Buffet, it is a story about Tully Mars (a fictional character and who now stars in Escape to Margaritaville) and his escape to Margaritaville (which it think has nothing to do with the play)...It is a good read, not deep, not philosophical, but highly entertaining, and dare I say, predictable at times... I give the story a four out of five. Because of the misleading description (which I'm not sure isn't Amazon's doing. If you want a semi-autobiography buy A Pirates Looks at Fifty. Here is Amazon's description of the 26.99 book: "Jimmy Buffett, bestselling author of "A Pirate Looks at Fifty," and hero to parrotheads everywhere, gives readers a humorous adventure set in the Caribbean, involving a lighthouse, a mystery, a wild cast of characters, and more than a few bottles of tequila. It's not on any chart, but the tropical island of Cayo Loco is the perfect place to run away from all your problems. Waking from a ganja buzz on the beach in Tulum, Tully can't believe his eyes when a 142-foot schooner emerges out of the ocean mist. At its helm is Cleopatra Highbourne, the eccentric 101-year-old sea captain who will take him to a lighthouse on a salty piece of land that will change his life forever. From a lovely sunset sail in Punta Margarita to a wild spring-break foam party in San Pedro, Tully encounters an assortment of treasure hunters, rock stars, sailors, seaplane pilots, pirates, and even a ghost or two. "And really why pay 26.99 for a book when you can pay 4.99 for the same book? With or without CD this is a steal..The rest of the review is edited from a one star review dated August 7th 2019..When I first received this book, it did not have a CD. I contacted the seller RareBooksforUS and made the problem known. The person I contacted was Ruth. We corresponded several times over the problem of no CD. Ruth was more than helpful as she was able to secure the right copy of the book for me and sent it out immediately. The only thing Ruth didn't do (which of course was beyond her power to do) was get the book autographed by Jimmy Buffet himself. But I want to thank her and RareBooksforUS for making my purchase right.

Wonderful and Beautiful
This is the most beautiful book I’ve read since James Herriot’s All Creatures Great And Small. A Salty Piece Of Land starts off a little slow, but quickly gets amazingly engaging with all the quirky and good characters that come into and remain in Tully Mars’ life. Then it gets beautiful, and stays that way through the end. I’ve been a fan of Jimmy Buffet’s music since the 80’s and this tale is as wonderful as any of his most feeling-full songs. I found this story wonderful, funny, upbeat, extremely well written, and beautiful. It’s moved me to go back and read Herriot again, which I last read as a child.

Good writing however
I kept losing track of the main character due to the extensive backstories that drifted in and out. Good writing however. I bought this because a male friend raved about the book. L
