BOARDING HOUSE AND DINING ROOM (OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) IS STILL OPEN. MENU CHANGES DAILY
On a quest to locate recipes like my relatives cooked and baked and this cookbook holds the answers to a few of my many questions. Recipe, what recipe? It was a pinch of this, a dash of that, and a handful of goodness to complete the recipe - many family favorites never recorded. This book also is full of her twists to old recipes I use and I look forward to trying them out. In several of the recipes I've studied, I can see where she s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d ingredients in order to feed her guests - in 1943 I'm sure this was a must. The Boarding house still offers lodging and Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room is open to the public - no reservations, no credit cards. "A line gathers each morning at 107 West Jones Street. At 11 o'clock, the doors of 107 open and the lunch crowd finds seats at one of the large tables-for-ten shared by strangers. Tabletops are crowded with platters of fried chicken and cornbread dressing, sweet potato souffle, black-eyed peas, okra gumbo, corn muffins and biscuits. The menu changes daily so regulars can have something different every day."
