A Grand Novel
The Son is fantastic. Part police procedural, part action thriller, and part family drama, this standalone from Nesbo represents the pinnacle of crime fiction. It has an unpredictable and totally engaging plot, fascinating characters, cool symbolism. The touching story revolves around Sonny Loftus, the Son of a disgraced police detective who apparently commit suicide after being discovered as a mole "employed" by a feared criminal. Distraught by his father's death, drug addict Sonny spends his days in jail, having previously confessed to crimes he did not commit in exchange for a continuous supply of drugs to feed his addiction. After learning that his father did not commit suicide, Sonny breaks out of jail and embarks on a unique journey of retribution against all those who enabled his addiction, killed his father, and stood to benefit from his stay in jail. Those in the criminal underworld and police detective Simon Kefas are on Sonny's trail; what follows is a highly charged, exciting, and emotionally driven story that delves deep into the past--into the interconnected histories of Sonny, his family, and his pursuers. Nesbo's morally complex vision and intelligence shine in "The Son"--through his nuanced characterizations and beautifully constructed narrative. An entertaining, intricate, and thoughtful work. Big time recommendation.

Capable Scandi Noir
Although The Son is (astonishingly) Jo Nesbo's eighteenth novel, it is the first of his that I have read. For those like myself, late to Nesbo's party, it is perhaps a good jumping-on point. Unlike the voluminous Harry Hole series for which Nesbo is best-known, The Son a stand-alone work of fiction. It is also clearly the output of a genre writer at the height of his craft; a solid, supremely enjoyable slab of pulp.It is difficult to summarise the plot of The Son without resorting to cliche. Simon Kefas, a maverick detective with a murky past, is joined by a rookie partner to investigate a seemingly straightforward murder. The case soon embroils them in a web of corruption extending throughout Oslo's institutions and seedy underbelly. Meanwhile, the titular Sonny Loftus breaks out from an un-escapable jail, and sets out on a bloody quest for revenge against The Twin. This criminal mastermind not only orchestrated Sony's father's apparent suicide, but had dealings with Kefas which have left the detective with an axe to grind.Nesbo's bibliography stretches back to the early 90's, yet his current bestseller status in the anglosphere is no doubt owes a debt to Larsson's Millenium Trilogy, The Killing, The Bridge and other giants of the burgeoning Scandi noir canon. Following the success of such works, The Son brings little new to the genre. This is Norway's socialist paradise reimagined as the Los Angeles of Philip Marlowe; all brooding winter skies and violent justice meted out in seedy back-alleys. Yet Nesbo keeps the plot moving at an enjoyable clip, with plenty of twists to keep the reader on their toes. He delivers ferocious set pieces, diligent detective-work and enjoyably catty dialogue with equal aplomb. Although, at six hundred pages, this is a reasonably lengthy book, there is never a feeling of bloat, or drift. The Son is not a work of towering literary ambition. Indeed, the only occasions on which it runs into difficulty are arguably when Nesbo aims to introduce some depth to his cartoon world of flawed heroes and monstrous villains. The Biblical references grate, with a few too many clunking Sonny-as-Jesus metaphors. The emetic romance subplot, and its soppy conclusion, sit uneasily alongside the main plot's bloody mayhem. Aside from these few missteps, however, The Son is an almost flawlessly-executed thriller. Comes recommended as a perfect, forgettable holiday read.
